Al Stone and Dana Dimatteo win Street Stock and Legends Cars races

While Groton’s Ron Yuhas Jr. and New Hampshire competitor Joey Polewarczyk Jr. were the big winners on the day at the Speedbowl, 2010 Street Stock champion Al Stone III of New Haven and Dana Dimatteo of Farmington also closed the season the best way possible, by reaching victory lane. Yuhas won the 150-lap Budweiser Modified Nationals and Polewarczyk took the win in the 150-lap ACT Tour Late Model event. Stone wound up the winner in the 50-lap Street Stock race, while Dimatteo recorded his first career win at the Speedbowl in the 25-lap Legends Cars feature.

Past champion Corey Hutchings was the leader early in the Street Stock event. Stone chased him through the race’s first 17 laps.

The battle for third was a tight one as several drivers were looking for the spot. Josh Galvin, Brandon Plemons, Walt Hovey Jr. and Shawn Monahan were among those jockeying for position. Hovey went spinning off the front stretch on lap-10 to bring out the caution flag and cool off the action.

Galvin took second from Stone following a lap-16 restart, leaving Stone to battle with Monahan for third. Monahan took that spot on lap-20 dropping Stone back to fourth. Paul Coutu held down fifth but as the race approached halfway, Hovey was back in contention and slipped past Coutu’s inside to take over the spot.

Monahan and Galvin hooked up in a battle for second with Monahan muscling by on lap-28. Stone was also able to get by Galvin just before Jack Aquilina spun in turn four on lap-30 to slow the pace.

The restart shook things up out front. Monahan powered by the outside of Hutchings when racing went green. Stone and Hovey were also able to get past Hutchings as the handles on his car began to go away. Caution waved again on lap-37 which gave Hutchings the chance to hit the pits for adjustment.

Monahan was comfortably out front of a Stone-Hovey battle for second once back under green. That battle proved to be key, and Stone was able to get that spot back leaving him to try and run down Monahan. Plemons was in fourth ahead of Galvin.

Monahan could not be caught and he cruised to his first win of the year at the track. Stone, Hovey, Plemons and Galvin remained in position behind at the checkered flag. Monahan’s team refused post-race inspection, handing the win to Stone and bumping up Joseph Arena to a top-five.

Dana Dimatteo picked up his first career Legends Car victory in the 25-lapper that opened Sunday’s action. He took the lead on lap-3 from Joey Mucciacciaro and never looked back. He survived two caution periods, including the final one which gave Alessandro Vitelli the chance to move up to second to try and challenge for the win.

Dimatteo was on his marks all race long and went on to the victory. Vitelli, Mucciacciaro, veterans Carl Blandina and George Whitney finished second through fifth. Whitney competed last evening at Langley (VA) Speedway at the Legends Cars nationals.

The Speedbowl is in action next weekend with the Holeshot Drag Nationals, allowing any vehicle the opportunity to compete in 100 foot drags. The event is October 16 & 17. On October 23, the track hosts the annual Smacktoberfest event including a $1,000 to win Demolition Derby, a School Bus Bash and more.
