Any place anyone recommends for good BBQ or other places to eat, or places to stay down there

I'm driving down from Maine gonna just catch some early racing, My WMT team isn't going down, so I thought I would go down relax and talk and meet some people... Any info or feedback will be great

I'm gonna leave Wednesday Afternoon and go down 95 to the Mass pike then down 81... I'm gonna go from Wednesday to like Sunday and get back home to Maine as quick as I can for Monday.... I Like traveling 95 all the way down but i think its too far outta my way. I like to stay in Fredericksburg VA and hit the Hooters next door to the hotel motel

my wife is from McLeansville NC, and we always go to Hursey's BBQ in Burlington NC. Good NC style BBQ (lotsa vinegar, not traditional BBQ sauce). It's right off 85 on your way to caraway, about 15 mins east of greensboro.

Living in the Burlington area, I'll give props to Hurseys. However, you might consider stopping at their Graham location on Highway 87. About one mile south of the interstate and a whole lot easier to negotiate than the one in Burlington.

Also, if you want the REAL DEAL at good prices (much cheaper than the hyper-inflated Lexington fare) get off of I-85 at Highway 86 in Hillsbourough. Go south about 3-4 miles and you'll find Allen & Sons. They still use real wood, not gas. IMHO, the best BBQ in this area without going down east.

BTW, many affordable hotel options in the Burlington area (especially at the Highway 49 exit) and it's less than 45 minutes to Caraway.

I like taking 95 to 85

78 to 81 to 77 is BY FAR more scenic, and doesn't really add much to the trip. Might even be quicker with 95/85 traffic

Usually go 78 81 220 about 40 miles longer than mapquest 95 85 route and no tolls once you get into PA as opposed to NJ Turnpike and Delaware and Maryland tolls.

I have to agree with taking 81 down. The farther I stay away from 95 the better off I am.

Statistically, you are better off on I-95 and it is the faster route.

I-81 between Bristol and Hagerstown has now earned the honor of being one of the most dangerous stretches of road in the country due to the extremely high volume of truck traffic. When accidents happen on that road, they usually don't end well for people in cars. Add to that the iffy weather in March (fog, freezing rain), I'd go 95 in a heartbeat. Once you get south of DC it's pretty easy driving.

I'm a night owl, so I usually make these trips in the middle of the night when there's a lot less traffic.

I talked with Ted Christopher and Todd Szegedy this morning. Both are planning to run the Caraway opener, Christopher with Brady as usual, and Szegedy in one of MSR's new Troyer's.

Don't think that Ryan's Dad has told Ryan yet.. Maybe it's a birthday surprise, but via text message, Ryan says he ain't going. Just in case the Ryan Preece fans are in the process of chartering one of Teddy's buses, they may be disappointed when they get there. ( Though TC, Georgie, Myers, Todd, LW, and all the rest might just make it worth it!)

For those coming down 81, what would you suggest?

Getting off in Roanoke area and taking 220 down to 68 to 40 to 220

or just staying on 81 to 77, then getting on 52 to 40 to 311 and take that into Sophia?

Sluggo44
03-11-2011, 06:07 AM
Your best would probaly be to take 81 to 220. It should take you down through Danville, VA and right into Greensboro , NC. After that , pick up 85 south toward Charlotte

81 to 220 won't take you thru Danville, but it will take you thru Martinsville and Greensboro, which is the best way for you to go.
