First driver to be named Connecticut Athlete of the Year

This Sunday, April 17, the Connecticut
Sports Writers’ Alliance will honor Keith Rocco as the Bill Lee Male
Athlete of the Year for 2010. Rocco, who claimed the NASCAR Whelen
All-American Series national championship in 2010, was also the Waterford
Speedbowl’s SK Modified® division track champion. The award will be
presented at the Alliance’s 70th annual Gold Key Dinner at the Aqua Turf
Club in Southington and marks the first time the honor will be given to a
driver.

Rocco amassed 10 victories at the Speedbowl in 2010, helping propel him to
the national title. It was the most victories ever by a competitor in a
single season in the division at the Speedbowl. Rocco also competed at
Stafford Motor Speedway and Thompson Speedway, both in Connecticut,
assisting his championship efforts. In all, he totaled 22 victories on
the year and finished 45 races in the top-five and 56 races in the top-ten
among the three tracks.

Rocco is already off to a hot start in 2011, claiming the Speedbowl’s
first two events of this season and posting a second place at Thompson.
He joins Maya Moore, the University of Connecticut women’s basketball star
who was named the Hank O’Donnell Female Athlete of the Year.

Following his win on April 9 at the Speedbowl, Rocco was asked if he’d be
challenging Moore to a game of one-on-one basketball anytime soon. “Sure,
then we’ll go out in the parking lot (for a race) after” offered an
amiable Rocco.

Rocco, who is 26, is a native of Wallingford and now resides in Meriden.
He will race next at Waterford Speedbowl April 16, for another NASCAR
Whelen All-American Series event at the shoreline oval.

Waterford Speedbowl is a three-eighths mile asphalt oval located in
Waterford, CT. It has been in operation for 61 consecutive seasons, one
of the nation’s longest operating facilities. It has been NASCAR
sanctioned for the past 11 years as part of the NASCAR ‘Home Tracks’
program and hosts weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing every
Saturday night through October. More information can be found at
