After two straight rainouts, Wall Stadium Speedway finally was able to open the 2011 season under promoter Cliff Krause and Freehold’s Chas Okerson proved that he is ready to go after this third straight driving crown. Okerson grabbed his eighth Modified victory and his 49th career win on the third mile paved oval holding off the challenges of Matawan’s Anthony Sesely to the finish line.

Lafayette’s Roger Coss jumped to the early lead of the 40-lapper, but Okerson was on his rear bumper almost immediately. This duo diced through a couple of restarts before Okerson slipped into the top spot. Okerson then led the field until a lap 11 caution when Toms River’s Tim Arre and Lavallette’s Adam LaCicero tangled on the front stretch. From that point on Sesely haunted Okerson all the way to the checker flags.

“It felt more like 150 laps than 40,” a winded Chas Okerson said in the winner’s circle. “Anthony (Sesely) was real fast, but he drove me very clean. He turned me once or twice, but gave me the chance to gather it back up.”

Shaun Carrig of Little Falls was fourth behind Okerson, Sesely and Coss, while Dave Garfinkel was fifth in the 18-car field.

The 20-lap Blewett Recycling Sportsman feature race offered a three-car battle most of the way as Howell’s Kevin Davison, defending champion Kevin Eyres of Colts Neck and Charlie Kremer III of Toms River fought for the top spot. Davison was able to hold on for the opening night win with Eyres and Kremer just feet behind. Eric Mauriello of Beachwood and Howell’s Chris Lane wrapped up the top five.

Shannon Mongeau of Bradley Beach and Jamesburg’s Whitey Miller wrestled for the lead in the Factory Stock 25-lapper early before Mongeau muscled into the lead on lap 13 and took his first win of the year. Todd Pilla and Rick Siddons, both of Beachwood, were second and third at the finish, with Marty Van Druten of Toms River and Ronnie Mullen of Brick fourth and fifth.

Martinsville’s Mark Tischler crossed the finish line first in the INEX Legend Cars 25-lap feature, but when his car failed a post race inspection, Howell’s Robert French claimed the opening night victory. Willingboro’s Trevor Alspach, Brian Spencer of Edison, Manasquan’s Kenny Van Wickle and Bobby Baltera of Flemington were second through fifth.

Post race inspection trouble also ruined the night for Street Stock winner Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg and runner-up Gregg Miranda of Hazlet. That official’s ruling moved defending champ Bill Vanderveen of Beachwood into the winner’s circle followed by Dave Jennings of Toms River. Stanzione and Miranda slipped back to third and fourth, while Nick Shaw of Warren was fifth.

Wall Stadium roars back into action this Saturday night (May 7) with Modified, Sportsman, Legend Cars and Factory Stock racing along with a display by the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club. Mothers in the crowd will be honored on Mother’s Day Weekend as “Ladies’ Night” festivities will feature a discounted admission and a potted plant, while supplies last, for the ladies.

Pit gates will open at 12:30 p.m., with a paid practice set for 1:30 p.m. Grandstands will open and regular practice will start at 4:00 p.m., with the first qualifying event taking the green flag at 6:00 p.m.
