SUCCESSFUL PRACTICE DAY IN THE BOOKS, RIVERHEAD RACEWAY OPENER SET FOR SATURDAY EVENING
After hosting a fantastic pre-season practice session this past Saturday afternoon which featured a great turnout of of race cars and a high energy level, things will ramp-up even more this Saturday evening May 7th at Riverhead Raceway when promoters Barbara & Jim Cromarty usher in the 2011 season with eight divisions of racing. A special 5:00 pm start time will be in effect for the opener of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.
As race teams and fans alike drove down the driveway of the 62-year old facility they were quick to notice a new and improved look and atmosphere at the quarter mile oval which shined under sunny and warm skies. The NASCAR Modifieds and Legend Race Cars led the way in car counts as both classes boasted full fields with their on track action hitting a fevered pitch. The NASCAR Modifieds will headline this Saturday's lid lifter with a 35-lap main event, while the Legend Race Cars will slug it out in a 20-lap feature.
Joining them are the Late Models who'll race a 25-lap feature while 20-lap contests will be on tap for the Chargers, Blunderbusts and Super Pro Trucks. The "world famous" Figure Eight racers will not have to worry about any water issues on opening night this year as was the case in 2010 and are slated to run a 15-lap main event. Enduro fans can look forward to an 8-Cylinder Enduro on opening night and the lap distance for that race will be determined by the final number of entrants.
Co-Chief Stewards Mike Cappiello and Jim Maggio announced Saturday that with all the cars expected to be on hand for opening night the pit gates for this week only will swing open at 11:00 am. For the rest of the month of May the pits will open at 12:00 noon and starting with June 4th a 1:00 pm pit gate opening will be in effect.
Over 200 laps of short track racing is on tap for this Saturday evening May 7th at 5:00 pm at Riverhead Raceway and after the turnout for warm-ups this past week it could very well be the best opening night in the rich history of the Route 58 oval.
