Anthony Sesely of Matawan raced to his first Modified stock car main event win of the young campaign at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. Sesely fought off the late-race challenges of defending champion Chas Okerson of Freehold to the finish. The combination of a Okerson/Sesely one/two finish on opening night and Saturday’s Sesely/Okerson finish locks the pair in a tie in the race for the season-long driving title.

Second-generation racer Jason Hearne of New Egypt raced to the lead at the outset and held that spot through the early going. Hearne’s great run ended before a quarter of the race was completed, however, as something failed in the suspension of his No. 12 and it slammed the fourth turn rail.

A short rain shower then slowed the event on lap 11 and when action returned Sesely wrestled with then leader Chris Hamilton of North Haledon before taking over the top spot moments later. Okerson then went to battle with Hamilton before sneaking into second on lap 24. The final 16 laps saw Sesely fight off Okerson, while Hamilton, Shaun Carrig of Little Falls and Lafayette’s Roger Coss wrapped up the top five.

“Don’t get me wrong, my family and crew always do a great job preparing this car,” Sesely said. “But it has been better than it was tonight. It was still very good, but it has been better. I think Chas had the better car by just a little bit tonight.”

Eric Mauriello of Beachwood drove into the runner-up spot with just nine laps remaining and then slipped into the lead with four laps to go to win the Blewett Recycling Sportsman division companion 25-lap main event. Adam Gordon of Brick and David Calabrese of Toms River were among the early leaders before Robert Sutphin of Brick took command before being overtaken by Mauriello.

Finishing third behind Mauriello and Sutphin was Brick’s Joe Mongeau, with Chris Lane and opening night winner Kevin Davison, both of Howell, fourth and fifth.

After crashing his No. 17 severely on opening night, Derek Hopkinson of Toms River returned Saturday night to win the 25-lapper for the INEX Legend Cars. Defending champion Trevor Alspach of Willingboro was second, while Zack Alspach, Mark Tischler of Martinsville and Edison’s Brian Spencer wrapped up the top five.

Coming from 12th on the starting grid, Shannon Mongeau of Bradley Beach found his second straight 25-lap Shinn Crane Factory Stock feature win to be an emotional one.

“Happy Mother’s day, Mom,” the 31-year-old speedster said into the microphone in the winner’s circle as his voice broke with emotion. “My mom went to the doctor during the off season for a check up and found out she had very aggressive breast cancer. Thanks to that early check up, she beat it! Thank God!”

Vern McLaughlin of Whitehouse Station crossed the line second, but when his No. 6 failed a post-race inspection Todd Pilla of Beachwood advanced into the runner-up spot. Paul Hartwig and Troy Gant, both of Brick, and Ed Bischoff of Howell were third through fifth.

Wall Stadium roars back into action this Saturday night (May 14) with Modified, Street Stock, Legend Cars and Factory Stock action. The Factory Stocks will be in the spotlight with a 50-lap main event. The visiting 4C SuperModifieds are also on the agenda, while the Sportsman cars have the night off. Both Boy and Girl Scouts in the crowd who display at least part of their uniform will receive a discounted admission and a chance to win a bicycle.

Pit gates will open at 12:30 p.m., with a paid practice set for 1:30 p.m. Grandstands will open and regular practice will start at 4:00 p.m., with the first qualifying event taking the green flag at 6:00 p.m.
