CARRIG WINS MODS; MONGEAU TOPS FACTORY STOCK 50 AT WALL STADIUM SATURDAY NIGHT

Dodging scattered showers under constantly threatening skies, Wall Stadium Speedway stock car racers completed the program on Saturday night and Modified racer Shaun Carrig and Factory Stock speedster Shannon Mongeau of Bradley Beach were two of the happy winners.

In the Modified 40-lap main event, Carrig and Tim Arre of Toms River fought for the lead most of the way while Anthony Sesely of Matawan moved into contention. Carrig later slipped to third on a restart as Arre and Sesely raced in tight formation. With just ten laps remaining that heated battle for the lead boiled over with Arre going for a spin exiting turn four and Sesely racing into the lead.

Although Sesely crossed the finish line first, the opinion of the officials was that Sesely was intentionally involved in Arre’s spin. That moved Sesely back to ninth in the final order, one spot behind Arre, and Carrig to the top of the rundown for his first win of the season.

“My car was good early in the race, but then we slipped back on one of the restarts,” Carrig said. “Then towards the end of the race my car’s power steering failed. If you’ve ever driven a power steering car with no power steering, you know how tough that can be.”

The official decision moved Chris Hamilton of North Haledon to second, while Matawan’s Amanda Sesely, David Reinhardt of Neptune City and Farmingdale’s Billy Cole completed the top five.

After starting 10th in the 21-car field, Mongeau grabbed his third straight win in the 50-lapper for the United Crane Factory Stocks. John Bowers of Pt. Pleasant lead from the start as Mongeau patiently raced to the front. By lap 35 Mongeau advanced to second and then took the lead for good with an outside front stretch pass on lap 38.

Mongeau then cruised to the win followed by Adam Gordon, whose car later failed a post-race inspection. That moved Bowers to second, while Howell’s Steve West, Brick’s Ronnie Mullen and Todd Pilla of Beachwood completed the top five.

Brothers Trevor and Zach Alspach of Willingboro made the final laps of the INEX Legend Cars 25-lapper a family feud before Trevor took down the win. Brian Spencer of Edison, Martinsville’s Mark Tischler and Derek Hopkinson of Toms River completed the top five.

Brick’s Robert Sutphin won his first Blewett Recycling Sportsman 25-lapper of the year over Howell’s Eric Mauriello, David Calabrese of Toms River, Howell’s Chris Lane and Holmdel’s Andrew Krause.

Howie Conk of Jackson topped the Street Stock 25-lapper over Hazlet’s Greg Miranda, Beachwood’s Bill Vanderveen, Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg and Joe Torchia of Jackson.

Wall Stadium roars back into action this Saturday night (May 21) with the first ever appearance of the dirt Sportsman style cars. The Street Stocks will also be in the spotlight in Twin 25 lap main events, while the asphalt Sportsman cars, Legend Cars and Factory Stock racers compete in single 25-lap main events. The Modifieds have the night off.

Pit gates will open at 12:30 p.m., with a paid practice set for 1:30 p.m. Grandstands will open and regular practice will start at 4:00 p.m., with the first qualifying event taking the green flag at 6:00 p.m.

Anthony Sesely of Matawan has been reinstated as the winner of the May 14 Modified stock car feature race at Wall Stadium. Sesely, who had crossed the finish line first, had been set back to ninth place, one spot behind Tim Arre of Toms River for what officials had believed was his part in a fourth turn spin out by Arre with 10 laps remaining in the race.

On Wednesday evening (May 18) an appeals committee made up of track operator Cliff Krause, race director Bill Brice and tech inspector Charlie Kremer, Jr. reviewed the incident and deemed it a racing accident. They then reinstated Sesely as the race winner. Shaun Carrig of Little Falls, Chris Hamilton of North Haledon, Amanda Sesely of Matawan and David Reinhardt of Neptune City completed the revised to five.
