Even with a quick rain delay during the Modified main event, Earl Paules of Palmerton, PA held off Rusty Smith of Oxford, NY to claim his first win of the season at Mountain Speedway on Sunday. For the second straight time this season, Steve Shultz of Drums, PA went on to claim victory in the Street Stock division and Harry O’Neill of Mountaintop, PA scored his second career FWD victory in only his second start of the season. Kevin Nowak of Long Island, NY drove to a division leading third INEX Legends victory of the year and Bruce Carman of Shaftsbury, VT drove to the Atlantic Coast Old Timers win in his 1948 Midget racecar.
David Schneider started from the pole position and led the opening circuit of the 40-lap Modified feature over Todd Baer, CJ Jones, Allen Creveling and Rusty Smith.
Baer grabbed the race lead on the third lap and CJ Jones moved into the second spot until several yellow flags slowed the even on lap eight. The worst of the lap eight yellows came when Nick Pecko spun in turn three. Several other were involved in the incident, including Kyle Ebersole, Ken Vogel, Jr., John Markovic, Jarrod Nace, Darren Scherer and Barry Callavini. Callavini needed assistance back to the pit area and was unable to continue.
The track was cleaned up but green flag racing was delayed because of rain.
Baer encountered mechanical problems under the rain delay and was not able to rejoin the field for the restart. Green flag racing resumed with CJ Jones in command. Rusty Smith, who had moved into third prior to the restart, held second, followed by Earl Paules and Schneider.
Following a quick lap 15 yellow flag, Paules took the race lead and two circuits later Smith Disposed of CJ Jones for second. Meanwhile, Brian DeFebo and Jimmy Zacharias battled side by side for fourth.
Jones fell from the top five when he was sup on lap 25 and with Paules still in command the yellow waved six laps later with DeFebo encountered mechanical problems and slowed on the backstretch.
With the green back out, Paules held off several charges by Smith and went on to take the victory. Ebersole worked his way back to the front to finish third, followed by Bobby Jones and Zacharias.
Earl Paules and David Schneider were heat race winners.
Jeff McGrath led his fellow Street Stock competitors to the green flag in the 25-lap Street Stock feature. He led the opening lap over Brian Brown, Kyle Curtis, Chris Burge and Dale Santee.
Chip Wanamaker clawed his way into the top five by lap five and Steve Shultz began to climb toward the front as well.
With McGrath still in command in the early going, Wanamaker worked his way to third and Shultz moved into fifth.
Brown, who eventually competed the pass for the lead on lap 10, pressured McGrath for the lead. Wanamaker held third, followed by Curtis and Shultz.
With four laps remaining, McGrath retook the lead when Brown suddenly slowed on the front stretch. However, Shultz and Wanamaker overtook the leader on the following circuit.
Shultz went on to take the checkers for his second straight win of the season over Wanamaker. McGrath finished a career-best third, followed by Steve Clark and Curtis.
Heat race victories went to Jeff McGrath and Chip Wanamaker.
The caution flag flew on the start of the 20-lap FWD feature when Alex Doyle tangled with Dylan Hoffman on the front stretch. In a separate incident, Cody Roth and Pete Verwys got together in turn two.
Green flag racing resumed and Justin Hughes, who had started from the pole, led the opening laps over Harry O’Neill, Jay Skupski, Eric Banashefski and Trevor Ahouse.
O’Neill took the race lead when Hughes drifted up the track on lap three and then Banashefski overtook Skupski for the third spot on the following lap.
Just past halfway O’Neill continued out front, pursued by Banashefski, Hughes, Skupski and Ahouse.
The yellow flag waved on lap 14when Doyle tangled with Ahouse in turn 2. Green flag racing resumed and with a good restart, Banashefski took command. His lead however was short-lived, as O’Neill fought back and retook the top spot.
Despite pressure from Banashefski, O’Neill went on to take the checkers for his second win in as may starts this season over Banashefski. Roth rebounded to finish a career-best third, followed by Jeff Biegley and Hoffman.
Eric Banashefski and Cody Roth were victorious in heat race action.
Carl Jones started from the pole position in the 20-lap INEX Legends feature and was overtaken by Darren Scherer for the lead before a single lap was scored. Kevin Nowak worked to the front and took command on lap two before the caution flew on the third circuit.
Green flag racing resumed and Nowak led over Scherer, Brandon DeBrakeleer, Scott Hubler and Stephen Hershey, but contact with Hubler and Raven Schrantz sent Hubler to the pit area.
Nowak continued to lead at halfway over Scherer, DeBrakeleer, Hershey and Todd McCollum. Shortly after, Brandon Michael cracked the top five.
The final yellow of the event can with one lap remaining when Hubler, who had lost several laps following the lap three yellow, got into Schrantz in turn one.
Despite the late race restart, Nowak held off McCollum to score his third win of the season. Scherer finished in the third spot, followed by Matt Marring and DeBrakeleer.
Heat race victories went to Todd McCollum and Scott Hubler.
The Atlantic Coast Old Timers took to the speedway for a 12-lap exhibition feature. Bruce Carman held off heat race winner, Bill Goodfellow to score the victory.
Mountain Speedway is just minutes from Hazleton, Pa, located on St. John’s Road, between Routes 93 and 309. Grandstand admission for all regular events is just $10 for ages 11 and older. Children 10 years of age and younger are admitted for free.

David Schneider started from the pole position and led the opening circuit of the 40-lap Modified feature over Todd Baer, CJ Jones, Allen Creveling and Rusty Smith.
