With an emotional Memorial Day weekend ceremony featuring the Navy Color Guard early in the evening and wild on track action later in the night, Wall Stadium stock car racing fans went home with plenty of memories early Sunday morning. When the final checker flag waved shortly after midnight, Modified drivers Shaun Carrig of Little Falls and Ron Frees of Browns Mills were two of the happiest as each took down a victory in “Twin 35” lap main events.

In the first Modified race, Matawan’s Amanda Sesely and New Egypt’s Jason Hearne fought for the top spot while Carrig rode a tight third. A lap 12 restart gave Hearne the chance he needed to take the top spot and he stretched an advantage past the half way mark.

A lap 22 restart saw Carrig wrestle his way past Sesely into second and he immediately went after Hearne. A Sesely spin on lap 28 set up the restart where Carrig was able to drive to the outside of Hearne. After a couple of laps of side-by-side racing, Carrig was able to power into the lead and on to the win. Hearne, Anthony Sesely of Matawan, Chris Hamilton of North Haledon and Freehold’s Chas Okerson completed the top five.

“I was real lucky that we fixed the power steering in this car because I really needed it tonight,” Carrig said. “It was real hot in the car tonight and we did a lot of side-by-side racing.”

In the second Modified race, Frees took full advantage of a third place starting spot to jump into the lead in the early going. Once out front he fought off the challenges of Farmingdale’s Bill Cole, Lafayette’s Roger Coss and Anthony Sesely before racing to his first career Modified win. Coss was second at the checker flag, while Okerson, Amanda Sesely and Mike Brennan of Old Bridge were third through fifth.

“This wasn’t supposed to happen,” Frees said in the winner’s circle. “We are really on a budget. The car was great and my crew gets credit for that. This was just awesome!”

Veteran Joe Mongeau of Brick took the lead on a lap 18 restart and went on to win the companion 25-lap feature race for the Blewett Recycling Sportsman cars. Howell’s Kevin Davison battled Mongeau before finishing second, while David Calabrese of Toms River, Kevin Eyres of Colts Neck and Adam Gordon of Brick were third through fifth.

Jackson’s Howie Conk grabbed his second win of the year in the 25-lapper for the Street Stocks. This race was stopped for more than 30 minutes for guardrail repair after Greg Miranda of Hazlet crashed hard in the second turn. He was not injured. Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg was second behind Conk, with Nick Shaw of Warren, Mike Kennedy of Pt. Pleasant and Jim Downey of Cliffwood Beach wrapping up the top five.

Shannon Mongeau of Bradley Beach took his fourth win in as many races in the United Crane Factory Stock 25-lapper. Early leader Whitey Miller of Jamesburg, Downey, Todd Pilla of Beachwood and Howell’s Steve West were second through fifth.

Robin Johnson took down the win for the visiting ATQMRA Three Quarter Midgets over Mike Janisch and Ian Cummins. Matt Roselli8 and Frank Fischer were fourth and fifth.

Wall Stadium roars back into action this Saturday night (June 4) with “Youth Baseball Night” festivities. On this evening, any youngster arriving at the track in the jersey they wear in little league of any organized youth baseball activity will be admitted free of charge. On the track the Modifieds will race in a 40-lap feature, while the Blewett Recycling Sportsman cars, Legend Cars and United Crane Factory Stock racers compete in single 25-lap main events. The Street Stocks have the night off.

Pit gates will open at 12:30 p.m., with a paid practice set for 1:30 p.m. Grandstands will open and regular practice will start at 4:00 p.m., with the first qualifying event taking the green flag at 6:30 p.m.
