Action-filled night in front of large crowd caps holiday weekend
Waterford Speedbowl was ready for the
smashing on Sunday evening, hosting the annual Memorial Day Madness. A
large crowd gathered to celebrate the start of summer, completing a run of
three-straight event days at the track. A Demo Derby and Speedbowl
Trailer Race were the main attractions on the night, along with a Ski Car
race, Rollover contest and Flagpole race all on the agenda as well. The
night was capped off by a Fireworks salute to our nation over the race
surface on a beautiful holiday weekend evening.
Chad Navin of Manchester began the night with a victory in Ski Car race,
with “ski’s” mounted on the rear of front wheel drive cars instead of
tires. At the end of 10 laps of mayhem and spinning cars all around the
Speedbowl oval, it was Navin who mastered the art of “skiing” the
Speedbowl’s three-eighths mile race surface.
In the 5-lap Flagpole race, where drivers had to circle a “flagpole”
obstacle placed in the middle of the track at the start finish line,
contact and madness ensued often each time around the flagpole. In the
end, Michael Kilmartin Jr. of North Haven claimed the victory.
In the Rollover contest, Brandon Heavenor of Uncasville was impressive by
completing a full roll plus more of his Jeep, scoring top honors in his
only attempt at mastering the art of the “rollover” over a ramp.
Dave MacIntosh of Old Lyme won the Demolition Derby. A veteran Derby
demolisher, the triumph was MacIntosh’s 10th of his career. He quickly
became the crowd favorite in a neon pink minivan, complete with flame and
smoke throwing stacks out of the hood of the one-time grocery getter. He
delivered richter-scale hits and beat out “Terrible Tim” Dubois for the
win.
And in the insane Speedbowl Trailer Race, it was none other than Trailer
Race veteran “Sick Rick” Whittle of Mystic besting arch-rival Jon Luther
of Groton in a battle to the end. Whittle pinned Luther’s entry into a
gaggle of debris, trailer remains and car remnants on the frontstretch in
front of a packed grandstands to deliver the final blow.
The Speedbowl returns to action three times this week, beginning with Wild
‘n Wacky Wednesday on June 1. Youth age 14 and under are free as always,
with adult admission of just $7.00 for grandstands. On Friday, the Show
and Go at the ‘Bowl is back featuring 100 foot spectator drags for almost
any type of motor vehicle imaginable. A car cruise on Speedbowl midway
accompanies the drag racing, and grandstands admission is absolutely free.
Saturday is the inaugural “Four-cylinder Fury” event, with the
Speedbowl’s X-Cars and Northeast Mini Stock Tour accompanying the
evening’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing for the Mini Stocks,
Street Stocks and SK Modifieds®
