Brian DeFebo Takes Top Honors at Evergreen Raceway Reunion

It was definitely a fitting night for Brian DeFebo of Berwick at Mountain Speedway on Saturday night. In conjunction with the 4th annual Evergreen raceway reunion, the talented Modified racer and former two-time Thriller division champion during the Evergreen era notched his second feature win of the season. Chip Wanamaker of Walnutport cruised to his second Street Stock victory of the year and Cody Roth of Kunkletown grabbed his first career feature victory in the FWD division.

Todd Baer started on the pole position and led the opening circuit of the 40-lap Modified feature over Allen Creveling, Ken Vogel, Jr, Brian DeFebo and CJ Jones.

DeFebo overtook Vogel for second on lap two and then shot by Creveling to move into the runner up spot on the following circuit. He then reeled in Baer, who had already led by a few car lengths.

Despite pressure from DeFebo, who had tried to make inside and outside moves work, Baer continued to hold the top spot on lap 18. CJ Jones ran third, with Mike Speeney and Bobby Jones in tow.

A battle for the fourth spot ensued between Jones and Speeney. Jones jumped to the outside and then he spun his machine in turn two, just when he appeared to take the spot.

Green flag racing resumed and DeFebo got the edge over Baer to take the lead. Baer settled into second, followed by Jones, Speeney and David Schneider.

Two yellow flags flew on lap 32. While battling to enter the top five, John Markovic spun in turns three and four and then several drivers in the top five tangled on the backstretch following the restart. CJ Jones had what appeared to be significant damage on his racecar, as did Schneider. Baer was also involved and was able to continue with limited damage.

Speeney and B. Jones lined up behind DeFebo for the restart. With three laps remaining, Jones tried to get underneath of Speeney in turn one. However, the end result was contact and a spinning Speeney.

Both drivers had to restart from the rear of the field and when it was all said and done, DeFebo crossed the strip to score his second feature win of the season over Creveling, Tommy Wanick III, Baer and Markovic.

“It’s great to win one of these things on this Evergreen Reunion night” said DeFebo, a three-time Modified track champion. “We’ll be back to win some more this season”.

DeFebo continued and invited all of the fans to his mother’s place of business for free drinks, Sophie’s Pit Stop in Berwick.

Heat race victories went to Todd Baer and Ken Vogel, Jr.

From the pole position, Brian Brown led his fellow Street Stock competitors to the drop of the green flag in the 25-lap feature. He led the opening circuit over Dale Santee, Sam Grow, Robert Fink and Bernie Uphold.

A tangle involving Steve Shultz and Sam Danaher in turn two brought out the first of several caution flags.

Green flag racing resumed and following the restart, Santee took the race lead. Meanwhile, Fink moved into third with Chris Burge and Chip Wanamaker in pursuit.

Mitch Hawk’s day came to an end when he and Grow collected in turn three and then Jeff McGrath and Bernie Uphold tangled in turns one and two on the following lap. The last of a string of yellows came when Danaher spun in turns one and two on lap 9.

Wanamaker, who ran second at the time of the yellow, restarted alongside of Santee. Wanamaker made the outside line work and took the race lead. Santee tucked into second, followed by Fink, Mike Garris, Sr. and Brown.

A yellow flag waved on lap 17 when Schultz and Garris tangled while battling for the fourth spot. Brian Wozniak and Burge were also involved in the turn three incident.

With Wanamaker still in command and one lap remaining, Brown battled with Fink for third. Contact was made and Fink spun around. Both drivers were forced to the rear of the field for the one lap shootout.

With the green flag back in the air, Wanamaker cruised to his second win of the season. Santee finished a career best second at the speedway, followed by McGrath, Shultz and Kyle Curtis.

Heat race victories went to Steve Shultz and Brian Brown.

Justin Hughes led the FWD drivers to the drop of the green flag in the 20-lap feature and led the first circuit over Pete Verwys, John Smith, Eric Banashefski and Trevor Ahouse.

While in a gaggle of cars behind the leader, Cody Roth spun to bring out the first yellow flag on lap two. It didn’t take long for the second lap two yellow flag to wave when Banashefski and Verwys tangled while battling for the second position following the restart. Dylan Hoffman was also collected, as was Jay Skupski, who retired from the event with heavy damage.

With Hughes still in command, Dan Freundt moved into the second spot and held the position on lap six. Banashefski worked his way back to third, with Smith and Roth in tow.

Roth overtook Smith and then battled with Banashefski for third. He finally completed the pass on lap 11 before overtaking Freundt for the runner up spot two circuits later.

Roth caught Hughes and showed him the bumper to let him know he was there. He then made a bid for the lead and competed the pass on lap 15. Hughes began to encounter mechanical problems and pulled to the infield two laps later.

Without looking back, Roth went on to take his first career victory in only his fourth start at the speedway. Freundt, who last competed in 2007, finished second. Banashefski, Ahouse and Smith completed the top five.

Justin Hughes and Jay Skupski were heat race winners.

Several past Evergreen competitors and champions were on hand to take part in the 4th annual Evergreen Raceway Reunion and the fans appeared to get their monies worth that night with $5 grandstand admission and fifty sent hot dogs.
