Championship hopefuls prove their mettle

Burt Myers had his work cut out for him on Saturday.

When the GMAC Insurance Modified Series randomly drew for starting position, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove drew 23rd for his spot. He would
only have 100 laps to try and gain as much position as possible.

Although Myers was leading the points entering the event, he was only a slim two points ahead of Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem. Brown’s luck
was a little more favorable: he drew 10th for his starting spot.

Fortunately for both of the point contenders, the double-file restart rule was in effect - and seven cautions gave them multiple opportunities to
use the outside lane to climb up through the field.

With some skillful track positioning, Jonathan Brown was able to slip past eight-time Champion Tim Brown to grab third. And on the second caution
of the night, the #53 car of Jonathan Brown was on the outside row trying to take the lead away from Chris Fleming of Mount Airy.

Although initially unsuccessful, Brown would secure the lead on the next caution. For over 50 laps, Brown soared ahead as the leader.

But devastation struck as Brown had transmission issues during a restart, preventing him from getting up to speed quickly. Fleming blew past him
into the lead. The field tried to react to Brown’s slowing car, but a pileup ensued. Brown headed right into the wreckage. So did Burt Myers.

Myers was able to get out of the carnage quickly, putting him in third. Brown followed right behind in fourth. Although they made a few attempts
at climbing up further, that’s where they finished.

The effort allowed Myers to keep his points lead, but Brown’s quick reaction kept the points damage to a minimum. Brown is second in the points,
only four points behind Myers.

Brian Loftin of Lexington ran into some bad luck on Saturday, relegating him to a 23rd place finish. Loftin drops from third in the points down
to eighth.

The vacuum left by Loftin was filled by John Smith of Mount Airy and Michael Clifton of Walkertown. They each move up to tie for third in the
points standings.

In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, points leader Tommy Neal of Walkertown spun on Saturday – as did points contender Bryant
Robertson of Lexington. Neal maintains the points lead but loses a lot of ground.

Kyle Edwards of King flew from the rear to the front, finishing 10th in the first race and winning the second race. Edwards moves up to tie
Robertson for second in the points.

John McNeal of Winston-Salem finishes seventh on Saturday, boosting him into the points lead for the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series. Matt Cotner
of Rural Hall drops out of the points lead after finishing 13th.

In the Freeman’s Auto Center Stadium Stock Series, Jason Tutterow of Mocksville finishes third for the fourth week in a row. His consistency
moved him past Jordan Fleming to claim the points lead. Teammate Michael Wells of Winston-Salem is only two points behind in second.

This Saturday is the largest and most prestigious race of the season for the Freeman’s Auto Center Stadium Stock Series: it’s the
Craftsman Stadium Stock 50. Plus, there will be racing for the Modifieds, Sportsman, and Street Stock Divisions.

Gates open at 6:00 for practice and the first race is at 8:00. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at
