J.J. WHITE MEMORIAL SEES CHUCK HOSSFELD WIN RoC SPECIAL - DARYL LEWIS JR. DECLARED WINNER OF THE NASCAR SUNOCO MODIFIED RACE
A very special night of racing saw six feature races run, including the sole appearance of the RoC Modifieds at Spencer Speedway in 2011, with Lockport ’s Chuck Hossfeld taking the win. Second place finisher Wilbur Hebing earned the valuable RoC spot and will represent Spencer for the 61st running of Race of Champions in July at the Oswego Speedway. Daren Scherer, Jimmy Zacharias and Matt Hirschman rounded out the top five finishers in the Spencer Speedway 75-lap qualifier.
Hossfeld thanked his dad. His father responded, “He (Chuck) is my hero and everyone should have a son like him.” Starting on the front row, Hossfeld led all 75 laps.

In NASCAR Sunoco Modified action Tony Hanbury thought he became the third different feature winner at Spencer Speedway this season. “I have to thank Dean Repka, for allowing me to use his Shangri La Car here tonight,” stated an elated Hanbury from victory lane. However following technical inspection the Hanbury car had the wrong fuel on board and was disqualified. Daryl Lewis Jr. was declared the feature winner. Kevin Timmerman, Amy Catalano, Ed die Hawkins and Mike Leaty rounded out the official top five finishers.
In Super Stock action Jim Steffenhagen Jr., Marion , NY , remains unbeaten and three-for-three at the fast half mile oval. Steffenhagen Jr. grabbed the lead from Henrietta’s Mitchell Wright on lap six and never looked back complete the 25 lap distance.
“These wins would not happen without my crew,” stated Steffenhagen.
Mike Bradshaw made it two-for-two, winning his second Auto Value Scorpion 20-lap main event. Brother Otis Bradshaw came home second followed by Alison Knoepfler, Joe Clark and Zach Willis.
Rookie driver John Welch held off a charging Van Grant to win the Hoosier Tire Super Six 25-lap main event. Tim Faro came home a close third. Ryan Hillegeer and Eric k Ruffell rounded out the top five finishers.
Finally Darren Scherer, who was on hand to do double duty between the Legend cars and his RoC Modified, won the 20-lap Legend Cars feature, while finished third in his RoC machine.
The 35-lap Sunoco Modified feature saw Daryl Lewis Jr. grab the lead at the drop of the green. He would lead the race all the way up until lap 27, when Hanbury, who ran second the whole race, ducked low entering the first turn and run side-by-side with Lewis Jr. By the third turn Hanbury held the front spot.
Only one yellow flag slowed the pace of the race. That came on lap 10, when Andy Lewis slid off the racing surface and into the infield grass on the backstretch.
Amy Catalano and Billy Burd won the two qualifying heat races.
Two yellows flew in the Super Stock main event. On lap 16, Tom Cat spun around in the fourth turn. The second yellow came on lap 19, Tom Cat lost a drive shaft while exiting the fourth turn. This allowed oil to spill all down the front chute and flames to appear from under the car. He was alright.
In Hoosier Tire Super Six action the feature race also saw two yellows fly. On lap three, Peter Cowell slowed on the front stretch to bring out the first yellow after heavy contact with the fourth turn wall. His crew made repairs and he would return to the race, two laps down to the rest of the field.
The second yellow on lap 20, when third place runner Ryan Hillegeer entered the third turn much too fast and spun out. He would gather it up and with just five laps remaining make it back into the top five at the finish.
The Legend Cars saw ten cars start the 20-lap feature. On lap three Darren Scherer made a bold move to the low side at the same time second place runner Brad Salatino tried the high side to get around leader Bryce Norton. The results from these moves saw Scherer take the lead and Salatino remain second, with Norton falling back to third. Norton would later fall back to finish fifth.
Salatino and Brandon DeBrakeleer won the two qualifying heat races.
The Auto Value Scorpions 20-lap main event saw three lead changes and just one yellow flag fly during their feature run.
Dale Lazzaro was the early leader, but was passed on lap four by Joe Clark using a low side pass exiting the second turn. Clark ’s lead lasted until lap eight when the yellow flew for Kevin Bertolone who spun down the infield grass on the front stretch. The restart saw eventual winner Mike Bradshaw put the nose of his Honda Prelude in front of Clark ’s Nissan 240SX to take the lead.
SPENCER NOTES: Promoter John White thanked the fans and race teams for coming out and honoring his later father, J.J. White, for whom the memorial races were run ….Two bicycles will be up for grabs this coming week as a drawing will be held using the names of all of the kids running in the night’s bicycle races. One boy’s bike and one girls bike will be given away…. The NASC AR stock cars will be off the week of July 1, to make way for a big drag racing weekend at Spencer.
This Friday will see a Four Star auto racing program on tap at Spencer featuring a double point Super Stock main event. It will be kid’s bicycle races that kick off the night’s action at 7 p.m. Race cars will hit the track at 7:30 p.m. sharp. Fans who bring their ticket stub from this past week can save $2 on admission.
