While behind the wheel of a rocket on Saturday at Mountain Speedway, Bobby Jones of Palmerton, PA took the race lead on lap ten and then held off Rusty Smith to score his second Modified feature event win of the season. Following a crash that took out the leaders with four laps remaining, Dale Santee of Lehighton, PA held off his competition to score his first Street Stock victory at the speedway. Also from Lehighton, PA, Dan Freundt grabbed his first Mountain victory by dominating the FWD feature.

Ken Vogel, Jr. started from the pole position and led the opening circuit of the 40-lap Modified main event over Todd Baer, David Schneider, Allen Creveling and Barry Callavini in the early going.

From the ninth starting spot, Bobby Jones wasted no time and began to advance positions, as he cracked the top five on lap three. Meanwhile, Baer hounded Vogel for the race lead and finally took the top spot on lap four.

Following a quick yellow on lap seven, Jones shot by the drivers in front of him before overtaking the second spot on lap nine.

The caution flag flew on lap 10 when Andy Walko, Vogel and Mike Speeney had tandem spins in turns three and four. That set Jones up for a shot at the lead.

With the green flag back out, Jones overtook Baer for the lead and then began to power away from the field. Schneider held third at that point in time, with Rusty Smith and Callavini in tow.

Schneider grabbed the runner-up spot from Baer on lap 19 and shortly after the caution flew when Baer spun in turn two.

Green flag racing resumed and several positions juggled and Kyle Ebersole joined the top five, along with Walko.

Following a caution with five laps to go, Smith climbed to second but couldn’t beat Jones to the checkered flag. The victory marks the second of the season for Jones, who also sits atop the division’s points standings. Ebersole, Walko and Callavini completed the top five.

Heat race victories went to Ken Vogel, Jr. and David Schneider.

Mitch Hawk led the Street Stock field to the initial green flag in the 25-lap feature and led the first circuit over Dale Santee, Chris Burge, Bernie Uphold and Kyle Curtis.

Following a quick lap two yellow, Chip Wanamaker moved into the fifth position. Steve Shultz followed through for sixth. With Hawk still leading the duo worked through traffic and Wanamaker climbed to third. Shorty after, Shultz overtook Burge for fourth on lap seven.

Wanamaker overtook Santee to move to second on lap nine and Shultz followed to third. It appeared that Hawk was well on his way to his first feature victory at the speedway but that all changed on lap 21 when Pat Mahoney got out of shape in turn four. He attempted to correct the car but with sever impact; it shot head on into the front stretch wall right in front of the leaders. With nowhere to go, Hawk t-boned Mahoney and both Wanamaker and Shultz piled into the mix.

With the red flag out, Mahoney gingerly climbed from his car and did not appear to be severely injured. Wanamaker headed to the pits for repairs and Shultz continued on while Hawk’s great run came to an end. The exchange put Santee back into the lead with Burge, Jeff McGrath, Curtis and Shultz in tow.

Green flag racing resumed and Santee watched the laps wind down. It didn’t take long for Wanamaker to battle back into the second spot, but in the end it was Santee, who visited victory lane for the first time at the speedway. Wanamaker crossed the stripe in second, followed by Burge, McGrath and Sam Grow.

Jeff McGrath and Chip Wanamaker were heat race winners.

Justin Hughes led the FWD drivers to the drop of the green flag in the 20-lap feature. He led the opening circuit over Dan Freundt, Harry O’Neill, Trevor Ahouse and Cody Roth.

The leader pushed up the track in turn four and Freundt took the inside lane to moved into the lead on lap two. He then began to put some distance on his competition before the caution flag waved when O’Neill and Hughes got tangled up on the backstretch when the battled for the second spot.

Eric Banashefski climbed to second, followed by Ahouse, Roth and John Smith.

With the green back out and Freundt still in command over Banashefski, Dylan Hoffman overtook fifth from Smith with seven laps remaining.

Untouchable over the final circuits, Freundt went on to take the checkered for his first win at the speedway. Ironically, it was only his second start of the season following a near four-year absence from driving. A solid second place effort will keep Banashefski atop the points standings and Ahouse scored a career-best third place finish. Roth and Hoffman completed the top five.

Heat race wins went to Trevor Ahouse and Cody Roth.

A handful of drivers from the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club were on hand to run an exhibition event for the race fans during intermission.
