Veteran racer takes first Mod win

Dean Ward of Winston-Salem made history on Saturday at Bowman Gray Stadium, and he had to work for it
every second.

Ward claimed the checkered in Saturday’s 100-lapper for the GMAC Insurance Modified Series, making him the 121st competitor to win a
featured event in Bowman Gray Stadium’s 63-year history. The accomplishment places him in the record books next to names like Junior Johnson,
Bobby Allison, and Richard Petty.

“We left here undefeated in the Stadium Stock Division, and that didn’t mean anything because it wasn’t written down,” said Ward. “I’m 45
years old – it’s about time I get my name in the record books.”

When the competitors drew for starting position, Ward drew the outside front row, with Michael Clifton of Walkertown starting on the
pole. Clifton jumped out to an early lead but was quickly confronted with a determined Dean Ward. The #71 of Ward hammered the bumper of Clifton,
but Clifton held strong.

On a double-file restart on lap 26, Ward slammed the gas from the outside to take over the lead. Clifton tried to reclaim the top spot
during a later double-file restart – but as he fought with Ward for position, the two collided. Clifton was sent spinning and fell to the rear.
Ward held on to the lead.

That was just the beginning of the trials for Ward. Robert Jeffreys of Winston-Salem, Brian Loftin of Lexington, Danny Bohn of
Mooresville, and Joseph “Bobo” Brown of Winston-Salem each tried their hand at challenging Ward from the outside. But each and every time, Ward
was able to hold his own.

After five years of Modified competition at Bowman Gray Stadium, Ward claimed his first win on Saturday. “If you have bad luck, the
clock’s going to keep ticking and it will come around,” said Ward. “I was really happy for my guys – they deserve it more than I do.”
Joseph Brown finished in second, and Brian Loftin took third.

In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Robbie Brewer of Winston-Salem claimed the checkered in the first 20-lapper. Tommy Neal
of Walkertown held the lead for most of the race until a flat tire and a bump from the rear caused him to lose control. Zack Clifton of
Walkertown finished behind him in second. Michael Adams of Yadkinville won the second Sportsman race, his first win ever at the Stadium.
Billy Gregg of Winston-Salem brought home the win in a wild race for the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series. David Sumner of Trinity finished
in second, while Jerry Helms of Winston-Salem finished third.

Drew Moffitt of Winston-Salem won the Craftsman Stadium Stock 50 on Saturday – the largest and most prestigious race of the season for
the Freeman’s Auto Center Stadium Stock Series. Chuck Wall of Clemmons and Johnny Burke of Winston-Salem came in second and third.
