TOMAINO SEEKS SECOND GARDEN STATE CLASSIC WIN AT WALL STADIUM SATURDAY (JUNE 25)

Although veteran Modified stock car driver Jamie Tomaino of Howell has enjoyed much success in his storied career, one of his most cherished racing memories came on a summer Saturday night in 1986 when he won the Garden State Classic at Wall Stadium. Now, on the 25th anniversary of that victory, “The Jet” will attempt to grab his second victory in the prestigious 125-lap event. Current plans call for spectator seating to open at 4:00 p.m., with qualifying slated for 6:30 p.m. and main event action set for 7:30 p.m. on Garden State Classic night Saturday (June 25) at Wall Stadium.

With his schedule cleared, Tomaino will be at the wheel of the Bob and Frank Boardwick No. 18, a car he raced once earlier this season. He is optimistic about his chances in the mid-season classic.

“The Boardwick No. 18 is a great car,” Tomaino said. “I can win with that car. I can win the Garden State Classic.”

In addition to Tomaino, young Modified upstart David Reinhardt has also added his name to the growing list of competitors for the race. The Neptune City speedster will be at the wheel of the Johnny Luhrs No. 32.

Earlier this week seventeen-time Modified winner Ken Woolley, Jr. of Howell said that he plans to compete in the Classic on Saturday night at the wheel of the Scott Brannick No. 51. Freehold’s Steven Reed, an 11-time Modified winner and the 2009 Classic champion, says that he will enter the contest in the Buddy Miller No. 56. Both drivers can be considered favorites judging by their past records at the track.

Bath, Pennsylvania racing standout Zane Zeiner’s team announced Monday that they would be at the track on Saturday. Zeiner’s car owners, Scott Matarazzo and Jeff and Sandra Willet, confirmed that their No. 76 would be in the field. Also making their intentions of Garden State Classic glory known on Monday were standout driver Jason Treat of Jackson and his car owner Brien Hamer. Hamer said that the team would be debuting an all-new No. 33 in the event.

Tomaino, Reinhardt, Woolley, Reed, Zeiner, Treat and any other “invaders” who enter will face plenty of competition from Wall Stadium Modified regulars. Wall’s Mod Squad will be headed by 2011 early season winners Anthony Sesely of Matawan, Freehold’s Chas Okerson, Shaun Carrig of Little Falls and Tim Arre of Toms River, just to name a few.

In addition to the championship 125-lap Modified race, the Blewett Recycling Sportsman division will compete in a 25-lap main event, while the United Crane Factory Stocks and the INEX Legend Cars also compete in 25-lap feature races. The Street Stocks have the night off.

Saturday’s schedule will see the competitor pit area and tire sales open at 1:00 p.m., with a special paid testing session then running from 2:30 until 4:30 p.m. Spectator seating will open at 4:00 p.m., while the regular afternoon practice session will then begin at 4:30 p.m.

Qualifying will then begin at 6:30 p.m. to be followed by feature race action for all four divisions.
