Showers forced cancellation of Friday’s activities at Spencer Speedway. Events planned for this evening are rescheduled to July 8th. The NASCAR stock cars will be off next week as the NHRA Summit Drag Race events will run on Friday night.

In NASCAR Sunoco Modified action, three local speedsters have visited victory lane at the paved half mile speed plant. Kevin Timmerman, Mike Leaty, and Daryl Lewis, Jr. are credited with victories. Owego, NY driver Tony Hanbury has competed in both the Legends and Sunoco Modified divisions. Hanbury was first to the Modified checkers last week. His borrowed race car did not pass technical inspection, negating his powerful run. Mike Leaty holds a slim ten point advantage over last year’s champion Kevin Timmerman. Amy Catalano, Daryl Lewis, Jr. and Billy Burd are all holding top five positions in the NASCAR sanctioned Sunoco Modified division. Hanbury’s technical issue has dropped his ranking down to seventh. To date, twenty-six teams have competed in the speedway’s top division.

Jim Steffenhagen, Jr. has a perfect record in Super Stock competition. Jim has earned three consecutive feature victories over a talented field. Roger Worden, Kris Hillegeer, Mitchell Wright and teen rookie sensation Tommy Catalano are worthy competitors to the high flying Steffenhagen. The popular Super Sixes (front wheel drive V6 racers) are lead by Ryan Hillegeer. One victory and consistent top five finishes allow Ryan to lead the point battle over rookie John Welch, Van Grant, Tim Faro, and Peter Cowell. Hillegeer, Welch, and Chris Andolino have earned their night in the spotlight of victory lane this season. The Auto Value Scorpions, a four cylinder class, are led by Mike Bradshaw. Mike’s two victories hold him ahead of Otis Bradshaw (one victory), Joe Clark, Kevin Bertolone, and Alison Knoepfler. Started just last season, sixteen racers have seen competition so far this year. Legends racers have been added to the program at Spencer Speedway. The small cars are powered by motorcycle engines. The bodies on these speedsters pay homage to the Coupe and Coach creations that started the stock car craze after World War II. Sunoco Modified racers Tony Hanbury and Daren Scherer share wins this season.

SPENCER NOTES: Two bicycles will be given away on July 8th. A drawing will be held using the names of all of the kids running in the night’s bicycle races. One boy’s bike and one girl’s bike will be given away. The NASCAR stock cars will be off the week of July 1, to make way for a NHRA Summit drag racing event.

Friday, July 8th will feature a Four Star auto racing program. Kid’s bicycle races kick off the night’s action at 7 p.m. Race cars will hit the track at 7:30 p.m. sharp. Fans that bring their ticket stub from the June 17th event will save $2 off general admission prices.

Spencer Speedway is located fifteen minutes east of Rochester, NY, along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson. Spencer Speedway is the local “NASCAR Place to Race” for Central New York. Points earned each week at Spencer are counted into the national NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship.
