The NEMA Midgets will make their first appearance of the 2011 season this Thursday at the Thompson International Speedway. The “Mighty Midgets” always create a lot of excitement when they take to the sprawling 5/8ths mile oval at Thompson.

Veteran Russ Stoehr is the current NEMA points leader and will head the star-studded filed of Midget competitors in their 25-lap main event. An excellent field of these amazing race cars is expected and they will qualify for their feature event through heat races.

Joining Stoehr will be drives like Doug and Brian Cleveland, Erica Santos, Chris Leonard, Lee Bundy and many more. The Midgets have been part of the Thompson scene for over 60 years. These incredible cars have always been a crowd thriller and their July 7th race is expected to be another in a long line of great Midget races at the famed Connecticut race track.

Even though the spotlight will be on the Midget race, Thompson’s exciting NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions will also be in competition. This will make for fun night out for families as many as this event will be part of their extended 4th of July holiday celebration.

Fans may come early and watch practice sessions. The grandstands will open at 3:30 PM and actual racing will get underway at 6 PM.

Thursday, July 7th will also be the final opportunity for Thompson’s Sunoco Modifieds to get their cars dialed in for their upcoming 50-lap feature race-the longest race of the season for the track’s headline division-which is scheduled for Thursday, July 14th. For Sunoco Modified race teams, this 50-lap race is the one to win. A victory in this extra distance race brings not only a big pay day, but also puts the winning team in a pretty special category since this is the biggest race of the year for them.

The complete Thompson International Speedway schedule of events is available on the track’s web site www.thompsonspeedway.com (http://www.thompsonspeedway.com). Hard copies of the track’s schedule are also available by calling the track office or by visiting any of the hundreds of businesses in southern New England that have the schedules available for free.
