STREET STOCK 50 SATURDAY AT WALL STADIUM

Modified stock car racing standout Chris Hamilton of North Haledon won his first 40-lap Modified stock car main event of the year Saturday night at Wall Stadium, while Shannon Mongeau of Bradley Beach grabbed a thrilling last lap victory in the companion 50-lap Street Stock championship event. While the win was Hamilton’s initial trip to the winner’s circle this season, it was Mongeau’s eighth as he won seven straight Factory Stock features earlier this season.

Farmingdale’s John McCormack jumped to the lead at the outset of the Modified race, but Hamilton was never far behind. By the time three laps were completed, Hamilton throttled to the front in impressive style. Tim Arre of Toms River then chased the leader for 20 laps before Shaun Carrig of Little Falls and point leader Anthony Sesely of Matawan both took turns in the runner-up spot.

Hamilton was able to hold command all the way to the checker flag, but Sesely and Farmingdale’s Bill Cole made contact in the heat of battle late in the event, which ruined both of their chances for a top five finish. At the checker Carrig crossed the finish line second, with Chatham’s Bill Weichert, Ron Frees of Browns Mills and Jackson’s Jason Treat completing the top five.

“This one is for my family,” Hamilton said of the victory. “They all put so much effort into this. They put so much time and money into us racing that they are the reason this win is possible.

“The car was real good tonight. It needed to be.”

Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg and Chatham’s Nick Shaw were early leaders in the Street Stock 50-lapper, before Beachwood’s Bill Vanderveen took command with 10 laps down. Soon Mongeau advanced to second and the fight for the win was on.

Vanderveen and Mongeau then tussled for the top sot through the majority of the race keeping the fans on the edge of their seats most of the way. This one then boiled over on the final lap when a lapped car blocked the path of the leaders forcing Vanderveen up and into the high groove.

Somehow Mongeau was able to take advantage of the situation and dive to the inside of turn three on the final lap and raced on to the last lap win. Vanderveen was second, with point leader Howie Conk third, Rich DeMarco fourth and Shaw fifth.

“We’ve only been out with this car a couple of times, but it has always been fast thanks to everyone who works on it,” Mongeau said. “This was a great race tonight. Somehow, things went my way at the end.”

In the companion United Crane Factory Stock 25-lapper, Whitey Miller of Jamesburg fought off Brick’s Ronnie Mullen most of the way before winning his first main event of the season. Todd Pilla of Beachwood was able to slip into second in the late going, while Steve West of Howell, Kenny Green and John Bowers of Pt. Pleasant wrapped up the top five.

Dan Roslin led the first 23 laps of the INEX Legend Cars 25-lapper, but Derek Hopkinson of Toms River completed his run to the front just in time to grab the lead and the win with two laps remaining. Robert French of Howell, brothers Zach and Trevor Alspach, both of Willingboro, and Ron Poley of Little Egg Harbor completed up the top five.

Wall Stadium roars back into action this Saturday night (July 23) with the

Tobias Speedsters making their first ever appearances at the third mile paved oval. Also on the card will be the Modifieds, Blewett Recycling Sportsman cars and the Street Stocks. The Factory Stock and Legend Cars have the night off.
