AMY CATALANO PICKS UP ANOTHER SPENCER/CHEMUNG/HOLLAND CHALLENGE RACE SUNOCO MODIFIED WIN
Amy Catalano, the 2009 Spencer track champion, from nearby Ontario, NY, picked up her third Sunoco Modified feature win of the 2011 NASC AR season at Spencer Speedway. It was also her second win in the Spencer/Chemung/Holland Challenge Series in 2011.
“This week has been a sad one as we lost a number of family members a couple of years ago during this week,” started off Amy in Victory Lane . But then asked about her ventures last week, she quickly picked herself up and related the information about a second at Holland followed by a fifth in the RoC Sportsman Modified 100-lapper.
In Super Stock action Kris Hillegeer claimed his second straight 20-lap feature win.
“I have to thank all of my family for coming out tonight. However, my wife had to stay home with the new baby,” he related.
Russell Peets won the Four Cylinder Auto Value Scorpion feature, running away from the rest of the starting field. “We were really hooked up tonight,’ stated Peets in Victory Lane . “I have to thank Ryan Brown for giving us this new car to use.”
The Super Sixes were vying for double points. It was Tim Faro bringing home the victory, his third win in four weeks.
The Legend Cars were on hand for their fourth appearance at the speedway in 2011. It was Brett Coon, from Elma , NY , taking home the 16-lap feature win. The race was shortened by four laps due to a major oily of the track when the number 8 driven by Bryce Norton let go of an engine.
An exhibition was presented by the Atlantic Coast Old Timers in which Bud Hinman, from Waterville , NY , just south of Utica , won the exhibition. Hinman was a former stock car driver at tracks like Weedsport and Mid-State speedways.
Dave and Amy Catalano brought the starting field of 17 Sunoco/Pro Modifieds down to the line. Amy jumped into the lead at the drop of the green followed by Dave, Mike Leaty and Kevin Timmerman.
The first of just two yellows flew on lap 10 when Daryl Lewis Jr. coasted to a stop on the back stretch. During this yellow Fred Taylor lost power and pitted.
The restart saw Amy lose the lead to Dave. She fell in second to hold off Timmerman who tried to charge around the top side for the position.
Lewis Jr. was also the cause of the second yellow, lap 15, when he spun around exiting the fourth turn.
This time Amy resumed the lead. Timmerman was able to make his move stick and he grabbed second, tucking in between Amy and her husband Dave.
With the white flag flying Dave Catalano’s car belched flames from the exhaust pipes and slowed to the inside of the track, finally coming to rest the first car one lap down. Amy took the victory followed by Timmerman, Leaty, Ed die Hawkins and Ryan Beeman.
“I want to remember to thank my mom,” stated Amy. “I forgot to mention her last time I won, so this one was for you mom.”
One more Spencer/Chemung Challenge races remains at Spencer, the season finale on September 9.
The Super Sixes were running for double feature points. Brandon Allen took off as the leader at the drop of the green. It wasn’t long before Bill Hallett challenged Allen in a side-by-side duel down the front chute, resulting in Hallett taking the lead on lap six.
Multi-time feature winner Tim Faro by now had taken third and charged hard under teammate Allen for second. On lap eight he worked his way into the lead.
The yellow flew on lap nine when Eric k Ruffell slowed on the track. The restart saw Adam VanHall slide off the track in the first turn. He made it back to complete the lap and then pit. Another yellow flowed on the next lap, allowing VanHall to make it back on track without losing a lap.
At the finish it would be Faro with the victory followed by Hallett, Chris Andolino in a borrowed car, Allen and Van Grant rounding out the top five.
The Auto Value Scorpion race was a blow out by Russell Peets. Peets took the lead on the first lap and never looked back. Peets had built up nearly a half straight away lead when Kevin Bertolone finally broke loose from the pack and took off after Peets. By the time the checkers flew Bertolone had closed to within a second of Peets. Alison Knoepfler came home in third followed by Zach Willis in fourth and Mike Bradshaw in fifth.
The Super Stocks saw a side-by-side battle for the first half of the 20-lap race between Billy Gleason and Kris Hillegeer. Each lap no one knew who would be the leader as the two battled toe-to-toe. Finally on lap nine a lapped car allowed Hillegeer to make the move to secure the first spot all to himself.
“I hated to use that lap car to block Billy and take the lead,” commented Hillegeer. “But Bill has been coming on strong as of late. One of these wins will be his in the near future.”
Mitchell Wright finished third followed by Brian Gordon and Tom my Catalano in his street stock.
The Legend Cars lived up to their billing, turning laps in the high seventies all race long. The 20-lap feature got off to a rocky start when Carl Vilardo IV and Bryce Norton came together going into the first turn. Both cars were able to continue in the race.
John “Shak’n” Bacon took the lead on the restart with Brad Salatino in second. One lap later Salatino drove hard into the lead. On lap seven it was Carl Vilardo IV charging through the pack to grab the lead from Salatino.
On lap 12, Brett Coon, who was running second after getting by Salatino on lap 9, dove low in the third turn to take the lead. Up front it was now Coon, followed by Vilardo IV and Salatino. Fourth place Bryce Norton would determine the finish when his engine let go on lap 16 spreading oil down the back stretch and through turn four. The extensive clean up forced officials to call the race complete on lap 16, shortening the race by four laps.
Coon took his first feature win of the year at Spencer.
“I want to thank NAPA for sponsoring our appearance at the track tonight,” related Coon. “Its too bad we had a shortened race, but that happens from time to time.”
SPENCER Notes: The Kids’ Bicycle Races were run before the start of the auto racing program. The kids were broken into three age groups. In the Five and under class, Joshua Warner out dragged the competition to take the win over Adian Davis and Trevor Catalano. The Six to Eight year olds saw Gavin Fernnays take the wins, with Glenn Bull in second and Blasé Miller third. Finally in the Nine and older class, Tim Boower took the win followed by Ryan Fernnays and Tyler Warner….DeRitters Garage sponsored a drawing for both a Boy’s and a Girl’s Bicycle. Brandon Kephart won the boys bike and Racelyn Lippa won the girls bicycle….Long time track welder Dave Herman passed away during the week. He was also the official welder for the RoC in recent years….Jeff Ruddy qualified for the Spencer/Chemung/Holland Challenge point fund by running three series races at Spencer/Chemung and three at Holland . He joins Dave and Amy Catalano as qualified point fund drivers.
Racing resumes at Spencer on Friday, August 5, featuring a full program of racing in all divisions. The Sunoco Modifieds will be running Twin 50-lap features. NASCAR race time will be 7:30 p.m. sharp. For more information go on Spencer Speedway go to www.spencerspeedway.org.
