Roger Coss was one of the many auto racing enthusiasts that were happy that Wall Stadium Speedway officials waited out early evening rain showers. The popular Lafayette speedster was then able to dry off his racecar and drive to his second Modified stock car feature race win of the season Saturday night.

Coss started fourth in the 40-lapper and immediately went after the lead. After a couple of caution flags for minor incidents slowed the early action, Coss and Farmingdale’s Billy Cole hooked up in a side-by-side battle that thrilled the fans for many laps. Even after Coss took the lead on lap 14, Cole continued to haunt him until lap 28 when point leader Anthony Sesely of Matawan powered into second.

Sesely then tracked down Coss to make it a tight finish for the lead, while Cole, Freehold’s Chas Okerson and Amanda Sesely of Matawan completed the top five.

“I hope Billy Cole knows how much fun that was racing like that lap after lap,” Coss said. “I really respect him for the way he drives and the way he drove tonight. He ran me hard but clean.”

After suffering through crashes in the last two Blewett Recycling Sportsman events, Zach Alspach of Willingboro made the ultimate comeback by winning the companion 25-lapper. Alspach took advantage of a front row starting spot and never gave anyone a chance to ruin his night.

Howell’s Kevin Davison also enjoyed a comeback after two straight wrecks by finishing second, while Toms River’s Charlie Kremer III, Howell’s Eric Mauriello and Kevin Eyres of Colts Neck were third through fifth.

Shannon Mongeau of Bradley Beach won the first of two 25-lappers for the Street Stocks, taking the lead near the half way point. Ron Frees of Browns Mills, Rich DeMarco, point leader Howie Conk of Jackson and Bayville’s Mike Tillett were second through fifth.

The second Street Stock 25-lapper saw Frees take the win after racing to the lead on lap nine. Nick Shaw of Chatham was second, followed by Howie Conk, Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg and John Kopf.

Shannon Mongeau visited the winner’s circle for the ninth time this second in the Sanzari/Shinn Factory Stock 25-lap feature after starting ninth on the grid. Early leader Ronnie Mullen of Brick was the runner-up, with Jim Downey of Cliffwood Beach third, Howell’s Steve West fourth and Rick Siddons of Beachwood, fifth.

Early in the evening, officials debuted a new four-cylinder racecar for competition in a division yet to be named. Current plans call for the car to be completely stock except for safety modifications. The cars will race on the fifth mile flat “inner oval” and the direction of competition, either right or left turns, will be determined in a blind draw before each event. Rules will be available soon.

Wall Stadium returns to action this Saturday night (August 13) with “First Responders Night.” On this evening, all members of police, fire and first aid organizations will be admitted free with proper identification. On the card will be the Modified stock cars in a 40-lap main event, while the Street Stocks, Legend Cars and Factory Stocks battle in 25-lappers. The Sportsman cars have the night off.

Pit gates will open at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday; with a paid practice session to be conducted from 2:30 until 4:30 p.m. Regular practice will then start at 5:00 p.m. Grandstand seating will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first qualifying event will take the green flag at 7:00 p.m.

Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on most Saturdays and Sundays during the summer months. The speedway is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B. The speedway hotline number is 732-681-6400, while CKMotorsports@aol.com is the track’s email address. More information is also available at www.wallspeedway.com (http://www.wallspeedway.com).
