Stock car driver Eric Mauriello enjoyed the biggest victory of his young career Saturday night as he won the “Sportsman 75” lap championship race at Wall Stadium. It was the fourth win of the season for the Howell resident.

After a series of caution flags for minor incidents slowed the early laps of the event, Brick’s Robert Sutphin was the early leader while fighting off Chris Lane of Howell, Trevor Alspach of Willingboro and others. All the while, Mauriello was advancing from a fifth starting spot and moved into second by the seventh lap.

Mauriello then sized up Sutphin before swinging to the outside lane on lap 11 to take the lead. Although Mauriello then stretched his lead, fans were entertained by a battle for second between veterans Joe Mongeau of Brick and Kevin Eyres of Colts Neck to the finish.

At the stripe Mauriello almost lost control of his car, later blaming the slip on be “over excited.” Eyres got second at the checker, with Mongeau, Charlie Kremer III of Toms River and Brick’s Adam Gordon wrapping up the top five.

“This is real big for us,” Mauriello said of the Blewett Recycling Sportsman win. “All the people who are joining me here in the winner’s circle made this possible. The sponsors are real important. And my dad, he made this all happen for me.”

Derek Hopkinson of Toms River took down the win in the companion 25-lapper for the INEX Legend Cars, taking the lead on lap three after starting fourth. Brothers Zach and Trevor Alspach, both of Willingboro, crossed the line second and third, with Dan Roslin of Jackson and Malcolm Campbell of Eatontown fourth and fifth.

Ron Frees of Browns Mills won his third main event in as many outings in the Street Stock 25-lap feature race. Frees started sixth before taking the top spot in the 19th lap with a daring inside lane pass. Early leader Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg was second, with Nick Kopf, Nick Shaw of Chatham and Jackson’s Howie Conk wrapping up the top five.

Buddy Sloed, Jr. won his second 25-lap main event in as many outings in the Three Quarter Midget feature race. Ryan Tidman, Zach Martini, Dan Lane and Matt Janisch wrapped up the top five.

Wall Stadium returns to action this Saturday night (August 27) with “Teen Night,” which will feature a discounted admission for teens and a live performance by the band Micro Machine. On the card the INEX Legend Cars will be in the spotlight in a 40-lap main event, while the Modifieds race in a 40-lapper and the Sportsman cars and the Sanzari/Shinn Factory Stocks race in 25-lap main events. Grandstand seating will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first qualifying event will take the green flag at 7:00 p.m.

The speedway kicks off the weekend with a free to the public custom, muscle car, street rod, racecar and classic car show on Friday night. Gates open at 5:00 p.m.
