GLEASON BREAKS INTO SUPER STOCK VICTORY LANE
After losing a close one last week and a post race banging session, Kevin Timmerman won his four NASC AR Sunoco Modified feature at Spencer Speedway last Friday. ”With all of that ‘dirty driving’ last week I had to put on an old fashion butt whipping to them,” stated Kevin Timmerman from victory lane. Timmerman took over the lead from Dave Catalano on a lap 14 restart following a spin out by his “arch rival” Mike Leaty. “This car was absolutely perfect tonight,” added Timmerman.
Amy Catalano, from Ontario , tried to close the gap on Timmerman but had to settle for a second place finish. Leaty over came his late race spin and bounced back to finish fifth.
Billy Gleason broke the strong hold on the Super Stock victory lane held by Jim Steffenhagen Jr. and Kris Hillegeer to become just the third different feature winner in that class with just two weeks remaining in the 2011 racing season.
Tim Faro earned his fifth Super Six feature win of the year, besting Brian Hallett and last week’s feature winner Chris Andolino.
Alison Knoepfler was able to repeat in the Auto Value Scorpion division, winning her second feature in a row. “Racing has really been fun these last two weeks,” stated Alison. “It’s just fun to win.”
The Legend cars were on hand with Tony Hanbury, from Owego, taking his second Spencer Speedway feature win of the year. After the race Hanbury approached the Coon car on the front straight before his victory lane interview. “I had to apologize to Brett Coon for that last lap contact.” Tony continued, “but he would have done the same to me to win”
Dave Catalano took command of the NASCAR Sunoco Modified main with Ed die Hawkins a close second at the drop of the green. Before the second lap could be completed Scott Combs went around in the fourth turn bringing out the yellow. Catalano remained in front, as he and Hawkins were able to pull away by three car lengths over Ryan Beeman.
The yellow flew for a second time on lap 11, for Matt Lees. The restart saw Timmerman take second from Hawkins and Mike Leaty pass Beeman. Leaty then took a run at Hawkins in third. Contact in the third turn sent Leaty high entering the fourth turn and looping out to cause the third yellow flag of the race.
On the restart, Timmerman out-dragged Dave Catalano for the lead. One lap later Amy Catalano passed her husband Dave to take second. Timmerman had a clear track in front of him and he pulled away from the pack.
The yellow flew on lap 19 when Bobby Lippa Jr. lost control following on track contact and hit the inside front stretch wall damaging his modified. The restart saw an exciting slide through the infield grass down the backstretch by Dave Catalano and Ed die Hawkins. Both were running in the top five when the accident occurred. Catalano would exit the race two laps later and Hawkins caused another yellow, lap 27, while trying to get back to the front.
At the finish line Timmerman won by nearly a quarter of a straight away over Amy Catalano. Beeman, Daryl Lewis Jr. and Mike Leaty rounded out the top five finishers. With his win and the additional 15 heat and leader bonus points vs. Mike Leaty’s one additional heat point, Timmerman surged ahead in track points over Leaty by 15 points.
Rookie Billy Gleason took advantage of his pole starting position to win his first Super Stock main event. He battled the entire distance with multi-time winner Kris Hillegeer. In the latter stages of the race Mitchell Wright challenged Hillegeer and took some of the pressure off Gleason allowing him to build up a two car advantage.
At the finish line Gleason took the victory followed by Hillegeer, Wright, Tom Fecteau and Brian Gordon, who purchased the Chevrolet Monte Carlo from Jim Steffenhagen Jr. at the beginning of the season. As Gleason exited the car the fans could hear a loud yell of joy in victory lane.
“I was a nervous wreck the entire race,” commented Gleason. “I have to thank the 25 (Wright) for little push. I guess I was putting on a show as my car ‘dirt tracked’ some in the turns.”
The Super Six feature went green-to-checkers without any issues. Rick Wilson took the early race lead but was passed on lap 11 by eventual race winner Tim Faro. As both drivers led 10 laps each, each received an additional 5 point bonus for leading the most laps.
Wilson fell back to third on lap 13 as Brian Hallett pulled his number 36 into second and chased after Faro. In the closing laps Chris Andolino took third from Wilson . They would finish in that order, with Van Grant taking the final top five finishing position.
There were troubles getting the Auto Value Four Cylinder feature under way. The race had to be restarted three times following the first lap due to spin outs.
Once underway it was Beth Dennie taking the lead in her Acura Integra. She held off repeated challenges by Zach Willis in his Integra. But it would be last week’s feature winner Alison Knoepfler in her Integra who took the lead on lap eight. She maintained the lead following a yellow for debris on lap nine.
Knoepfler, who seems to be peaking at the end of the season, came home her second straight victory. Willis, Mike Bradshaw, Dennie and Joe Clark rounded out the top five. When asked if being in front helps the cars, Knoepfler said,” It helps some being in the cleaner air.”
Tony Hanbury had to work hard to take the Legends feature win. He led the race for 14 laps, when he made contact with second place runner Carl Vilardo IV in the fourth turn resulting in both cars spinning out. This handed the lead over to Brett Coon. Hanbury charged back through the field to challenge Coon for the lead with one lap remaining. As the leaders exited the fourth turn Coon went spinning and Hanbury cross the finish line in first.
“You’d think some of these guys were running for two hundred grand,” stated a somewhat frustrated Hanbury in victory lane. Vilardo IV worked his way back to second followed by Jake Vernon, Brad Salatino and Bryce Norton in the top five.
SPENCER NOTES: The kids ruled at Spencer last Friday with bicycle races, a poster contest and a bicycle giveaway. Blake Giglio from Williamson was declared the winner of the five and under bicycle races. In the 6 to 8 year old category, Tyler Catalano took the win. And in the nine and older class Joey Ruffell was the winner. The AMSOIL bus tour was present at the speedway and presented kids in the bicycle races with decals….Poster contest winners included Trinity Miller, Dakota Miller, Blaze Miller and Ryan Hermaette. These kids met with their most popular drivers on the front straight and had pictures taken with them on the front straight and had the opportunity to sit in their cars during the intermission….Get well wishes go out to track announcer Bill Vandeweghe, who is under doctor’s care and was unable to be at the track last Friday. John Flock, Mike Paz and “Racing” Randy from WCFM radio took over the announcing duties for Bill….John Padchaull proposed to Leslie Pierce at the Start-Finish line before the races. She accepted his proposal.
