Hurricane Irene that swept up the eastern seaboard of the United States Saturday and Sunday forced Riverhead Raceway promoters Barbara and Jim Cromarty into a historic decision as they canceled the Saturday evening NASCAR Whelen All-American Series card on Friday afternoon due to the impending storm. It was the first time in the five decades the Cromarty's have promoted NASCAR stock racing that they called a show the day prior to the event.
With the weeks winding down, coupled with a full slate of racing set for the remainder of 2011 the Richie Evans NASCAR HoF Induction Celebration 61 for the NASCAR Modifieds will now have to wait until the spring of 2012. The date and format for the race will be announced when the track releases its 2012 schedule later in the fall.
Also victim to Irene were the Late Models who were set for a 50-lap race and the Grand Enduro drivers who were to run a 50-lapper of their own. Due to the lateness of the season neither of these races can be made up either, but the Late Models do have another 50-lap race on the horizon September 17th, so all is not lost.
Grand Enduro drivers who signed-up for the August 27th race can either apply that entry fee to this Sunday September 4th or their last race of 2011 on Saturday evening September 24th.
The Labor Day weekend Monster Truck spectacular is next up at Riverhead Raceway this weekend September 3rd & 4th starring BIGFOOT. Joining the Monster Trucks on Saturday are the NASCAR Modifieds, Chargers, Blunderbusts, Super Pro Trucks and an 8-Cylinder Demolition Derby. Sunday BIGFOOT & friends are in action along with a full card of Enduro racing with the Grand, 4/6-Cylinder Truck, 8, 6 & 4-Cylinder Enduro classes all in action.
A free Amusement Ride for the children will be available both days with show time Saturday set for 6:00 pm, while Sunday's show starts at 12:30 pm. In the event of rain Sunday the Enduro card would move to Monday September 5th at 12:30 pm.
