St. Johns, Pa- Following a short tribute to the victims of the September 11 attacks ten years ago, the drivers at Mountain Speedway took to the 1/3-mile oval for door-to-door action on Sunday. With $777 and double points on the line in the annual Mark Corbisiero Street Stock Memorial, Steve Shultz of Drums, PA grabbed the race lead when the leaders tangled with six laps remaining. He held on to take the win, which was his second victory in the memorial event. Kyle Ebersole of Hummelstown, PA drove to his third Modified victory of the season and Pete Verwys of Stroudsburg, PA stormed to his second straight FWD feature win. Unstoppable over his last few outings, Matt Papa scored his third straight victory in INEX Legends action and Alex McCollum was the Bandolero victor.

Chris Burge led a full field of cars to the drop of the green flag in the $777 to win, 77-lap Mark Corbisiero Street Stock Memorial. The race is held annually in honor of Corbisiero, who passed away in 2003 after losing his battle with cancer. Along with Cook’s Corner Restaurant, Aamco Transmissions of Stroudsburg and Mike Odwazny sponsored the event.

With the green flag out, Burge led the opening lap over Jeff McGrath, Kyle Curtis, Dale Santee and Bernie Uphold and then the lead changed when McGrath got by Burge on lap one.

Joe Hoffman worked his way into the top five and then got by Santee for the fourth spot on lap 7. With McGrath still in command, sixteenth place starter, Richie DiMarco battled with Steve Shultz for the fourth spot. DiMarco completed the pass on lap 12 and then got by Hoffman and Burge on the following circuit to move into second.

By this point in the race McGrath had opened up a healthy lead but that all went by the wayside when the caution flag waved when Curtis stopped near the apron of the racetrack. Green flag racing resumed and McGrath tried to hold off DiMarco, but he surrendered the lead on lap 17.

Shultz worked his way into second and with 30 laps complete, DiMarco led over Shultz, McGrath, Robert Fink and Brian Wozniak.

Several yellow flags flew on lap 48. First, for a tangle with Josh Mooney and Fink and then another when McGrath was spun in turns three and four. With DiMarco sill in command on lap 51, Shultz continued to hound him for the lead, followed by Wozniak, Chip Wanamaker and Justin Mooney.

Wanamaker overtook Wozniak for third and then set his sights on the leaders. Shultz and DiMarco ran side by side for countless laps before Shultz almost lost his car when coming out of turn four on lap 67. He had to lift to gather it back up and Wanamaker took the second spot.

Wanamaker reeled in DiMarco and battled for the lead. After several bump and run attempts by Wanamaker, DiMarco finally got the shot that turned him around in turn two. Both drivers were forced to restart from the rear of the field and the race lead belonged to Shultz.

Looking for his second win in the annual memorial race, Shultz drove off to the victory, which was also his fifth of the season. Wozniak finished in the second spot, followed by Justin Mooney, Gene Bowers and Mike Garris, Sr.

Heat race victories went to Robert Fink, Steve Shultz and Chip Wanamaker. Justin Mooney was the consi winner.

Ken Vogel, Jr. led the Modified starting grid to the drop of the green flag in the 40-lap event. He led the opening lap over Brian DeFebo, Nick Pecko, Allen Creveling and Todd Baer before the yellow flag flew when Lenny Fischer spun in turns three and four on the fifth lap.

Green flag racing resumed and Pecko, who had just moved to second three laps earlier, took the race lead.

Kyle Ebersole cracked the top five, as did Zane Zeiner in the early going and both tried to reel in the leaders. With 13 laps complete, Pecko continued to lead over Ebersole, Zeiner and DeFebo.

The caution flag flew on lap 21 when Pecko looped his machine while coming off of turn four. The change of events moved Ebersole to the race lead and Zeiner to second.

It appeared that Zeiner might have had something for the leader in the closing laps, but he was forced out of contention with mechanical failure on lap 34. Green flag racing resumed and Ebersole held off fifteenth place starter, Bobby Jones, to claim his third victory of the season. DeFebo, Barry Callavini and Baer completed the top five.

Heat race victories went to Brian DeFebo and Ken Vogel, Jr.

Larry Spencer II started from the pole position in the 20-lap FWD feature, but lost the race lead when he and outside pole sitter, Frank Hughes tangled in turn four.

With a complete restart underway and with Dylan Hoffman on the point, Justin Hughes grabbed the lead. Trevor Ahouse held the second spot, with Cody Roth, Pete Verwys and Eric Banashefski in tow.

In an unbelievable three and sometimes four wide battled for the lead in the early going between J. Hughes, Ahouse, Roth and Verwys, Roth took the lead for a moment on lap five and then Verwys grabbed the lead on the same circuit.

With six laps in the books, Verwys held the point, followed by Ahouse, Roth, Banashefski and Hughes.

Despite the close competition in the division, Verwys held on over the remaining laps to score his second straight FWD victory, over Ahouse, Roth, Banashefski and Brandon Oltra.

Heat race victories went to Trevor Ahouse and Justin Hughes.

Carl Jones started from the pole position in the 20-lap INEX Legends feature, but lost the race lead to raven Schrantz before a single lap was complete. Schrantz led the second lap over Jones, followed by Todd McCollum, Scott Hubler and ninth place starter, Matt Papa.

McCollum climbed to second and then overtook R. Schrantz for the lead on lap three. Meanwhile, Papa charged into the second spot.

It didn’t take long for Papa to move into the runner up spot before he put the pass for the lead on McCollum on lap seven.

Untouchable over the second half of the event, Papa took the checkers to score his third straight victory at the speedway. McCollum settled for second, followed by Hubler, R. Schrantz and Van Michael.

Heat race victories went to Matt Papa and Scott Hubler.

Alex McCollum edged out David French for his first win at the speedway in Bandolero action.
