Jimmy Blewett made his first start of the year at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night a successful one as he lead from start to finish to win the 76-lap John Blewett Memorial for Modified stock cars. The Howell resident won the race, which was contested in memory of his late brother who passed away in a Connecticut racing accident four years ago, in a car that was painted the same as the first car that supporter Don Ling owned. Ling was honored for his contributions to the sport during the evening.

After suffering numerous mechanical problems early in the evening, Blewett posted the seventh fastest time during time trials before picking the second starting spot in a blind draw. Blewett battled fellow front row starter Kevin Flockhart of Jackson in the early going until point leader Anthony Sesely of Matawan arrived in second from a fifth starting spot.

Simply put, from lap eight on Sesely tried every possible path to race into the lead only to have Blewett slam the door time after time. As it had been much of the race, when the checker flag waved Sesely was right on Blewett’s rear bumper. Shaun Carrig of Little Falls, Lafayette’s Roger Coss and Flockhart completed the top five.

“It has been a long time since I’ve won a race, so this feels really good,” Blewett, who has concentrated on dirt track racing this season, said. “I want to thank (car-owners) Scott Matarasso and Jeff Willett for letting me do this. I also have to thank my grandfather and father for all their support with our racing.”

Trevor Alspach of Willingboro had as close to a perfect night as possible on Saturday.

In the 38-lap Sportsman main event, Alspach sprinted away from the field to take his first ever win in that division. Rookie Jonathan Mandato of Toms River was impressive in finishing second, while Holmdel’s Andrew Krause, Brick’s Robert Sutphin and Howell’s Kevin Davison wrapped up the top five.

Alspach was also victorious in the 25-lapper for the INEX Legend Cars, although he had to fight of Jackson’s Dan Roslin and Howell’s Robert French to the finish line. Derek Hopkinson of Toms River and Zack Alspach of Willingboro were fourth and fifth.

Shannon Mongeau of Bradley Beach came from 13th on the grid to win the 25-lapper for the Sanzari/Shinn Factory Stocks. Steve West of Howell was second, while Todd Pilla of Beachwood, Jim Downey of Cliffwood Beach and early leader Troy Gant of Brick wrapped up the top five.

Mike Tillett of Bayville celebrated an emotional career first win in the Street Stock 25-lapper as he dedicated the victory to his father-in-law George Pieruicenti who passed away on Friday evening. Tillett jumped to the lead early and never looked back even though Nick Shaw of Chatham closed in at the finish. Bill Vanderveen of Beachwood, Jackson’s Howie Conk and Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg completed the top five.

Wall Stadium will wrap up the Saturday night regular season this weekend (Sept. 24). The Modifieds will lead the regular season finale with a 40-lapper, while the Sportsman cars, Legend Cars, Street Stocks and Factory Stocks are all scheduled for 25-lappers. Grandstand seating will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first qualifying event will take the green flag at 7:00 p.m.

Stock car action will then return on October 22 for the first ever “Halloween Spooky Spectacular” before the season closes on November 25 and 26 with the traditional “Turkey Derby XXXVIII” events.
