(LEHIGHTON, PA 9-24-11) For an unprecedented eighth time this season, the Saturday night race card at Lehighton’s Mahoning Valley Speedway has been cancelled due to rain. Nearly one-third of the scheduled events have now fallen to rainouts.

And although there was none of the wet stuff coming down at the time the call was made to cancel, it was the day before that that was the culprit. Heavy downpours caused minor flooding to the track and adding to the condition was the excessive amount of water seeping onto the track which oozes down from the hill that the grandstands are situated on.

The attention now shifts to next Saturday evening, October 1 for the 2011 season finale which will be headlined by Hand 5 of the Modified 100 Poker Series, a $3000-to-win 100-lap feature for the Modifieds. Also in action will be the Late Models, Street Stocks, Dirt Mods, Pro4 Late Models and the 4c Super Modifieds. Race time is 6:00 p.m.

Not only will there be $3000 for the first place finisher of the Modified race but the overall Poker Series title is up for grabs as well.

Leading the way will be Tyler Haydt who cinched the 2011 Mahoning Modified title and now looks to capture the Poker crown as well. He currently holds three Kings and an Ace while Matt Hirschman is showing three Queens an Ace and a Jack. Earl Paules has a pair of Aces and Kings. John Bennett, Chip Santee, Terry Markovic and Matt Higgins also have a hand in possibly winning.

There is a $5000 jackpot with $2500 to win, $1500 for second and $1000 for third. Plus the eligible driver with the worst poker hand will collect $1000.

Because of this week’s rainout Haydt was able to lock his third career Mahoning championship, having won titles in 2000 with the Pro4 Late Models and 2002 in the Late Models.

Likewise championships have also gone to Austin Kochenash in Late Models, Kris Graver in Dirt Mods and Barry Christman, Jr., in the Pro4 Late Models.

Going into next Saturday’s finale the top six in Street Stock points, led by TJ Gursky, are all vying for the title. Steven Steigerwalt, Kevin Smith, Jason Frey, Josh Mooney and Randy Ahner, Jr., will be the contenders.

Pits and grandstand gates open at 4:00 pm with racing set to begin at 6:00 pm.

Mahoning Valley Speedway, run under the direction of the husband and wife team of Doug and Gena Hoffman, is located on PA route 443, two miles west of Lehighton.
