Newly crowned Mahoning Valley Mod Champ Tyler Haydt looks to add Poker Series title in season finale

Although Tyler Haydt has clinched the 2011 Modified track championship at Mahoning Valley Speedway, he’s not done for the year just yet as the 26-year old Kunkletown ace is eyeing one more title.

Up for grabs is the Poker Series crown which Haydt and several others will be vying for this coming Saturday, October 1. It will be the season finale at the popular paved Lehighton quarter mile oval.

Also in action will be the Late Models, Street Stocks, Dirt Mods, Pro4 Late Models and the 4c Super Modifieds.

Now concluding its third season, the Poker Series has become the signature event at Mahoning Valley. It’s 100-laps of some of the best side-by-side racing seen anywhere and even though that may sound like a cliché, it is in fact the fact. Racing in all classes at Mahoning provides fans The winner of the race will earn $3000.

But for Haydt, he has a chance at also collecting the $2500 top prize for the Poker Series title. Heading into Saturday’s meet he holds the top poker hand with a three Kings and Ace.

Also stake a claim of the ante are Matt Hirschman who is showing three Queens, an Ace and a Jack. Earl Paules has a pair of Aces and Kings. John Bennett, Chip Santee, Terry Markovic and Matt Higgins also have a hand in possibly winning with pairs of 9’s, 7’s, 6’s and 4’s respectively.

There is a $5000 jackpot with $2500 to win, $1500 for second and $1000 for third. Plus the eligible driver with the worst poker hand will collect $1000. The worst money takers include Mike Carroll, Jr., John Markovic and Don Wagner.

Champions have also been awards in the Late Models, Austin Kochenash, Kris Graver, Dirt Mods and Pro4 Late Models, Barry Christman, Jr.

However, going into Saturday’s finale the top six in Street Stock points, led by TJ Gursky, are all contesting for the title. Steven Steigerwalt, Kevin Smith, Jason Frey, Josh Mooney and Randy Ahner, Jr., will be the challengers.

Pits and grandstand gates open at 4:00 pm with racing set to begin at 6:00 pm.

The 2011 Awards Celebration is tentatively set for Sunday, October 31 with news to follow shortly.

Mahoning Valley Speedway, run under the direction of the husband and wife team of Doug and Gena Hoffman, is located on PA route 443, two miles west of Lehighton.
