Motorsports Expo 2012 proved to be good exposure for NASCAR’s upstate home tracks. Fans and competitors alike circulated the large arena in Syracuse to get a preview of new racing season. Among the shine of the race cars, Spencer Speedway, Holland Speedway and Chemung Speedrome joined dozens of tracks greeting the fans. Schedule cards and other information were shared with the attendees.

Chemung Speedrome has moved their racing events to Sunday afternoons at 2:15. “That came as a pleasant surprise to many fans,” said John Flock, race director at Chemung. “The feedback was positive for this change. A popular comment was that now they could take the kids to the races and still get home at a reasonable hour. Others mentioned that Chemung is now in their plans for 2012. Many of the competitors stopped by and expressed their plans to race at Chemung in 2012. Fans from Oswego showed interest in the Spencer Speedway program. Some said that they haven’t been to Spencer in several years, and now plan a return visit to the Williamson, NY oval.”

“This change has met with enthusiasm from competitors. Now the SUNOCO Modifieds can race three events each weekend, giving the racers a chance to earn NASCAR points for state and national honors,” stated Spencer Speedway owner John White. Mr. White also is co-owner of Chemung Speedrome with Bob Stapleton.

Spencer track champion Kevin Timmerman was on hand Saturday to greet fans. His father, Gary, and crew chief/brother Mike also joined the fun. They greeted fans and passed out their share of the treats from the candy bowl. Kevin’s car is ready for the opener at Spencer on May 18th. A test a tune session will be held May 11th. Chemung will open on June 3rdafter their May 27th test session. Amy Catalano, a 2011 competitor at Spencer and Holland, earned the NYS NASCAR title in 2011. She will not run the full schedule this year as a bundle of joy is due in the Catalano household. Husband David and son Tommy will join Amy’s assault on the ranks of the SUNOCO Modifieds. This will be fan favorite Tommy’s rookie season in the open wheel division. Tommy’s new Modified earned Best of Show - Asphalt Division honors. The Lewis racing clan had their sharp race vehicles on display. Daryl Lewis, Sr. may just bring his car to Chemung for some Sunday racing fun. Tony Hanbury’s beautiful Modified and Legend cars attracted many fans. Photos displayed in the booth were provided by Ron Rigby and Mojo Photos.

Interest in the 2012 Spencer Speedway NHRA Drag Racing was evident as many schedules were shared with the fans. May 5th will be test and tune night, with tech inspection starting at 1:00 p.m. The Summit E.T. Series points start May 12th. Super, Pro (Mod), Street, and Street Trophy classes are featured.

Spencer on Friday, Holland on Saturday, and Chemung on Sunday afternoons now will give competitors a choice of three NASCAR tracks and Saturday events at the NHRA sanctioned dragway.
