After several seasons of coming close, Lavallette’s Adam LaCicero put it all together Saturday night at Wall Stadium and won the 40-lap Modified stock car main event in impressive fashion. After a spoiled initial start returned his Klee’s Bar No. 27 to the pole position, the “Racing Police Officer” rocketed to the lead and never looked back.
“This is the greatest thing I’ve ever done,” LaCicero said in the winner’s circle. “I am happier for my father than I am for me. He has worked so hard for this. I’ve got a great crew of family and friends who have helped so much. This is for them.”
For almost the entire 40-lap distance, the battle for second on back was thrilling. At the finish, defending Modified champion Anthony Sesely was the runner-up, with Freehold’s Chas Okerson, Roger Coss of Lafayette and Howell’s Ken Woolley, Jr. wrapping up the tight top five. Of special interest was a side-by-side battle for sixth between Shannon Mongeau of Bradley Beach and Little Fall’s Shaun Carrig that lasted for at least ten laps. Mongeau won the spot by inches at the finish line.
Charlie Kremer III of Toms River raced into the lead early and earned his first main event win of the year in the companion 30-lapper for the Sportsman cars. Opening Night winner Eric Mauriello of Howell applied strong pressure to Kremer before settling for second, with Holmdel’s Andrew Krause finishing third. Zach Alspach of Willingboro and Brick’s Shawna Ingraham were fourth and fifth.
Using the outside lane to power to the lead early, Brick’s Ronnie Mullen later held off the late-race advances of Red Bank’s Kenny Green to win the 25-lapper for the Factory Stocks. Steve West of Howell, Marty Van Druten of Toms River and Scott Riggleman of Manchester were third through fifth.
Jumping to the lead on a late-race restart, defending champion Derek Hopkinson of Toms River made it two straight victories on the young season in the Legend Cars 25-lapper. Brothers Zack and Trevor Alspach, both of Willingboro, were second and third, with Malcolm Campbell of Eatontown and Howell’s Robert French completing the top five.
Jackson’s Howie Conk also made it two straight wins by tracking down leader Nick Shaw of Chatham with just two laps to go to win the 25-lap Street Stock main. Bayville’s Mike Tillett, Phil Fortuna and Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg wrapped up the top five.
Wall Stadium roars back into action this Saturday night (May 12) with Modified, Sportsman, Legend Cars, Street Stock and Factory Stock racing. Also on the Mother’s Day weekend card will be a special race for the moms. Pit gates will open at 1:00 p.m., with a paid practice set for 2:30 p.m. Regular practice will start at 4:30 p.m., with a driver’s meeting set for 6:00 p.m. The first qualifying event takes the green flag at 6:30 p.m.
On Friday evening starting at 5:00 p.m., a free to the public custom car show is scheduled to run until dark. A highlight of the evening is when the custom cars in attendance have the opportunity to take paced laps around the famous high-banked speedway.
Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on most Saturdays and Sundays during the summer months. The speedway is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B.
