The annual Test & Tune Session yearly opens up the racing season at Spencer Speedway. This year was no exception, as a record 57 cars, and a good size crowd turned out last Friday night. Three complete test rounds were run, each featuring seven different classes of cars. The fourth session of 4-cylinder cars was on the track when dusk was fast approaching. With darkness falling, the remainder of the fourth session was scrapped.

A fine field of 17 NASCAR Sunoco Modifieds was on hand with Tony Hanbury claiming fast time, with a 20.74 second lap, for an average speed of 87.934 mph. Hanbury becomes the first driver to break the 21 second barrier in a Sunoco Modified during the annual Test & Tune session. Hanbury’s lap is just .15 seconds short of the fastest time ever turned in during a Test & Tune session by an RoC Modified.

The biggest class on hand was the NASCAR Auto Value Scorpions, featuring Hondas, Chevrolets, Toyotas and Ford Mustangs. Alison Knoepfler set fast time in this division with a lap of 26.70 seconds or 67.416 mph.

The RoC tour-type modifieds of Chris Ridsdale were on hand. Ridsdale turned in a lap of 21.14 seconds, 85.147 mph. The RoC cars will be making just one appearance in 2012 at Spencer, June 8, for a 75-lap RoC Qualifier.
The newly revamped NASCAR Super Stock class saw eight stockers on hand. Fast time was set by Jim Steffenhagen Jr., with a lap of 22.79 seconds, 78.982 mph. During the final session for the Super Stocks, Steffehagen’s car rolled to a stop on the back stretch and had to be towed to the pits.
As for the NASCAR Super Sixes, eight cars were also on hand with Tim Faro running consistent fast laps. He turned in a lap of 26.71 seconds or 67.390 mph.

Even with this excellent turn out of cars, more are expected to compete come this Friday for the 58th Annual Season Opener. Topping the schedule of events in the opener is a 35-lap Sunoco Modified main event, the first of a number of Holland/Spencer/Chemung Challenge Races. Also a complete program of Super Stocks, Super Sixes, Auto Value Scorpion, Legend Cars and Empire Trucks Series will take place. Race time starts at 7:30 sharp, with grandstands opening at 5:30 p.m. Pits open at 4 p.m.

SPENCER NOTES: Rookie Shawn Farey was the first on the track to open the Test & Tune session, which started at 5:30 p.m. and ended when dark engulfed the track. A few minor spins took place during this year’s Test & Tune. The first around was the beautiful powder blue Mid-State Vintage Coupe of Bill Fitzsimmons in the second turn.

Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester , NY , along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson . Spencer Speedway is the local “ NASCAR Place to Race” for Central New York . Points earned each week at Spencer are counted into the national NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship.
