Defending Modified stock car driving champion Anthony Sesely raced from 11th on the starting grid to win the 40-lap main event at Wall Stadium Saturday night. It was his first win of the season.
The contest was a wild one with several tangles and minor incidents slowing the action. Modified rookie David Calabrese of Toms River was the first leader and retained his front running status through several early race cautions. Shaun Carrig of Little Falls way flying early as he raced from sixth into the lead by the time the fifth lap was in the books.
Carrig then led the way as Sesely and a host of others raced through the pack to the front. Once Sesely arrived in second, he immediately went after the top spot and raced into the lead on the outside lane on the 15th lap.
Sesely was in control the rest of the way, but there was plenty of wild action behind him. One incident that gained a lot of attention came on the 25th lap when standouts Ken Woolley, Jr. of Howell and Freehold’s Steven Reed tangled in the third turn while in the heat of battle for the third spot. Both drivers showed their displeasure with the turn of events and were forced to the pits for the remainder of the race.
At the checker flag it was Sesely and Carrig the top two, while Adam LaCicero of Lavallette, Shannon Mongeau of Bradley Beach and Roger Coss of Lafayette completed the top five.
“That was about as wild as it gets,” Sesely said in the winner’s circle. “Cars were going in the fence and in the infield. It was crazy!
“I have to thank my sponsors, like United Crane, Posh Car Wash and Oasis Chevy for getting us here this year. If they didn’t step up, we weren’t racing this year.”
The companion 30-lapper for the Sportsman cars was also a wild affair with several cautions and lead changes. Brick’s Adam Gordon, Dan Roslin of Egg Harbor Township and Shawna Ingraham of Brick all took turns leading through the first 26 circuits.
When Ingraham spun from the lead late in the race, Charlie Kremer III of Toms River was in a position to race into the top spot and on for the win. Andrew Krause of Holmdel was right on his bumper for second, while Jonathan Mandato of Toms River, Howell’s Joe Nappi and Zach Alspach of Willingboro completed the top five.
Neil Katz of Pt. Pleasant was the star early in the 25 lap feature race for the Factory Stocks, but Kenny Green of Red Bank raced from 11th on the grid to track down the leader. Green took the top spot with ten laps in the books and was chased across the finish line by Jim Downey of Cliffwood Beach, Manchester’s Scott Riggleman, Katz and Steve Michel of Egg Harbor.
Derek Hopkinson of Toms River raced from an 11th starting spot to win his third straight 25 lap Legend Cars main event. The defending champion dove to the inside lane on lap 19 to take the lead and never looked back. Howell’s Robert French was the runner-up, while brothers Trevor and Zack Alspach, both of Willingboro, were third and fourth. Casey Robicheau of Whiting was fifth.
Nick Shaw of Chatham rocketed into the lead early and then raced home to win the 25 lap Street Stock feature. Defending champion Howie Conk of Jackson was second after two straight wins, while Mike Tillett of Bayville, Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg and Dominic Casola of Holmdel wrapped up the top five.
Melissa Mullen of Brick won the special 10-lap race for Moms celebrating Mothers Day weekend.
Wall Stadium roars back into action this Saturday night (May 19) with the Sportsman cars in the spotlight in Twin 25 lap main events. The ATQMRA Three Quarter Midgets will make their first appearance of the season, with the Legend Cars, Street Stocks and Factory Stocks also seeing action. The Modifieds have the night off.
Pit gates will open at 2:30 p.m., with practice starting at 3:30 p.m. Grandstands open at 4:00 p.m. A driver’s meeting is set for 6:00 p.m. and the first qualifying event takes the green flag at 6:30 p.m.
Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on most Saturdays and Sundays during the summer months. The speedway is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B.
