Kevin Timmerman, from nearby Ontario, NY, picked up his 14th career NASC AR Sunoco Modified feature victory at last Friday’s opening night, at Spencer Speedway. Timmerman, who started third, inherited the lead on lap six after then leader Dave Catalano spun his car entering the third turn.

“We stripped this car down to the bare chassis this past winter,” related Timmerman in victory lane. “It is like riding on a rail around this track.” He added,” I want to dedicate this feature win to the Spencer brother, who have all now passed away.”

Finishing second was Owego’s Tony Hanbury followed closely by Fulton , NY ’s Ryan Beeman. Rounding out the top five were Matt Lees and Andy Lewis. Four early race cautions slowed the feature.

In Super Stock action Terry Cheetham led all 20 laps to take his first victory in that class. “It’s been 13 years since I raced a full fender car. This was fun right here!” Billy Gleason finished second followed by Willie Strusz, Kris Hillegeer and Mitchell Wright.

The Super six 20-lap feature saw Brian Hallett make a last lap pass on 2011 division champion Tim Faro to take the victory. Faro finished second followed by Van Grant, Brandon Allen and Adam VanHall. The feature went green-to-checkers without a caution.

In the Auto Value 4 Cylinder division it was Mike Bradshaw taking the victory over a closing Kevin Bertolone. “I have to acknowledge the love and support my family gives me in this sport”, stated Bradshaw.

The INEX Legend cars were on hand to run an exciting 20-lap feature. Carl Vilardo led the race from lap one to sixteen, when he spun out passing a lap car. He restarted at the back of the field and charged all the way back to second in just four laps. His night ended in post race inspection, when he was found light at the scales. The winner was Brett Coon. Brad Salatino was credited with second followed by Bryce Norton.

The Auto Value Four Cylinder Scorpions were the first feature up. Outside pole sitter Kevin Bertolone was credited with leading the first lap in the 15-lap main event. As the cars entered the third turn on the second lap, Mike Bradshaw ducked low and took the lead. Kevin Willis tried to follow Bradshaw through the hole, but was stopped by Bertolone and settled back into third.

The first yellow flew on lap nine for a car spinning in the second turn. Two additional yellows would follow, both for spins by rookie Tim Lewis Jr..

Bradshaw held on for the victory. He was followed across the finish line by Bertolone, Willis, Alison Knoepfler, Russell Peets and Otis Bradshaw rounding out the top five.

The INEX Legend Cars were next up, for a 20-lap main event. Carl Vilardo took the lead at the drop of the green followed by Brad Salatino and teammate Bryce Norton. Vilardo spun on lap 17 and handed the lead over to Brett Coon, who was able to get by both Salatino and Norton. Vilardo restarted at the back of the field and charged all the way back to finish second behind Coon. However in post race inspection his number9 came up light and he was disqualified. This moved everyone up one position, resulting in Salatino getting second followed by Bryce, John Bacon and Adam Depuy.

The Super Stock 20-lap feature saw outside pole sitter Terry Cheetham pass Mitchell Wright and blast away to a ten car advantage. The race would run green-to-checkers resulting in Cheetham taking a fifteen car length victory over Billy Gleason, Willie Strusz, Kris Hillegeer and Wright.

The Super Six feature would also go green-to-checkers. Last year’s track champion, Tim Faro took the lead from the pole and maintained it until the last two turns of the last lap. Going down the backstretch on lap 19, Brian Hallett made his move, ducking to the low side entering the third turn. He was able to nose ahead of Faro exiting the fourth turn and out drag him to get the victory. Faro finished less then a second behind for second. Rounding out the top five were Van Grant, Brandon Allen and Adam VanHall.

The 35-lap Sunoco Modified feature was the first round in the NASCAR Spencer/Holland/Chemung Challenge Series. Following the heat races, the top three finishers in each heat redrew to determine the starting lineup. This resulted in Dave Catalano starting on the pole with his son Tom my starting on the outside pole.

As the green dropped Tom my grabbed the lead, but the yellow flew before a lap could be completed when Mike Leaty spun in the third turn. The restart saw one lap get into the books before the yellow flew for a second time. This time Mark Cline got into the first turn wall, resulting in enough damage to his car to end his race.

Dave Catalano was now leading Kevin Timmerman, Wilbur Hebing and Tom my Catalano. Entering the third turn Dave spun resulting in a number of top runners being caught up in the melee. Once the dust settled Hebing, Tom my Catalano and Ed die Hawkin’s cars were too damaged to continue.

Timmerman now found himself in the lead and he made the most of it. On the restart he blasted away from Tony Hanbury and Ryan Beeman to stretch out a ten car advantage. He would maintain this advantage throughout the rest of the 35 laps. Timmerman took the victory followed by Hanbury, Beeman, Matt Lees and Andy Lewis.

Timmerman commented on the track this year, “The track has been more consistent this year. After it was repaved the oils had to get out of the surface.”

He also added a comment about the Sunoco Modifieds, ”This class is much more affordable then a full blown NASCAR Tour type car.”

This Friday, May 25, will see a full four star program of NASCAR Sunoco Modifieds, Super Stocks, Super Sixes and Auto Value Four Cylinders on tap. The Auto Value Four Cylinders will actually competing in two separate features that night.
