Former champion Tommy Tombarello, Jr. grabbed his first NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Small Block Supermodified checkered flag of the season on Friday night, in a race that saw several cars sidelined as the result of a lap seven crash that put the field under red flag conditions for several minutes.

Leslie Keyser took the high line past polesitter Tony Carroll and led the early laps of the Benson Lumber and Hardware Supermodified main, but when opening night winner Mike Ordway, Jr. had mechanical issues on lap seven, the night ended quickly for several contenders.

Ordway broke a hub and lost his left rear wheel coming off turn four, spinning to a stop against the outside retaining wall. In the scramble to get past, Sparky MacIver and rookie contender Ryan Gath got together and slid through the infield grass before slamming hard into the inside wall.

At the same time, Moe Lattime caught a wheel and flipped the Dick Osborne machine right in front of the main grandstands, with a carburetor fire putting an even more spectacular end to his night. Track safety crews were quickly on the scene, putting out the blaze and helping Lattime out of the wreckage.

All of the drivers involved walked away uninjured, but several of their crews are going to have long nights ahead to get ready for next Friday‘s action. When racing resumed, Tombarello blasted to the lead, and he went the distance to post the win with a comfortable margin.

Defending champ Wayne Helliwell, Jr. collected runner-up honors, with Mike Netishen rounding out the podium in third followed by P.J. Stergios, rookie Jason Phillips, early leader Keyser, Mike Spurling, Danny lane, Carroll, and MacIver.

Chris Titcomb set the pace for the first four laps of the Late Model Sportsman main, with veteran Tony Kawejsza moving past to take over from there. J.R. Baril scored his second consecutive Late Model Sportsman win, after taking the lead from Tony Kawejsza on lap 21 with a strong move to the inside as the pair entered turn one.

Once out front, Baril was never challenged, leading the rest of the way to collect his second checkered of the season. Kawejsza finished his 2012 debut with a strong runner-up result, with Timmy Johnson, Jason Welch, Michele Fushpanski, Patrick Stewart, Kyle Roy, Michael Welch, Ray Dinsmore, and David piper the rest of the top ten.

Jim Shorey was the class of the field in the David’s Race Cars and Components Hobby Stocks, dominating the action to pick up his first win of the year in the Doug Ricker tribute car. Shorey parlayed a front row start into an easy win, bouncing back from engines woes in the season opener.

Kenny “Caveman” Scott got his first podium of the year with an impressive second place run, with former Roadrunner champion Niko Maniatis third. Fourth spot went to Brian Thompson, followed by Ron Washburn, Chris Jacobson, Jim Piaseczny, Patrick Tanguay, Mike Williams, and Brian Palen.

Evan Horvath and Jake Rheaume battled side by side over the last half of the American Auto Parts Ironman feature event, with Rheaume eventually taking the high side to victory. Horvath was second by a half car length at the finish line, with Tommy Johnson, Danielle Simoneau, and Wayne Purington rounding out the top five.

The E Keys 4 Cars Northeast Classic Lites brought a healthy field of cars for their first Lee appearance of the season, and it was Rob Bryant outrunning early leader George Helliwell for the win in their feature event. Duane Skofield, Eddie Gilman, and Myles Devits were the rest of the top five.
