Stock car driver Shannon Mongeau enjoyed one of the most successful nights of his career Saturday as he won the 40-lap Memorial Day weekend main event for Modified stock cars and the 50-lap Factory Stock feature race. The Bradley Beach speedster celebrated the “sweep” by accepting a broom from his crewmen in “Victory Lane.”

In the Modified 40-lapper, Mongeau took advantage of a front row starting spot and immediately rocketed to the lead. A couple of cautions for minor incidents slowed the race early, but Mongeau held his ground. At the halfway point of the contest, former champions Chas Okerson of Freehold and Anthony Sesely were there to challenge but Mongeau held his ground all the way to the finish. Shaun Carrig of Little Falls and Adam LaCicero of Lavallette were fourth and fifth.

“There are a hundred great drivers in the pit area, but Chris (Hamilton) picked me to drive his car,” Mongeau said. “I wanted to win a race for him very badly.”

Hamilton drove his own car until he suffered a badly broken wrist in a freak accident at last November’s Turkey Derby race. He picked Mongeau to drive his car since he can no longer race.

In the companion 50-lapper for the Factory Stocks, Mongeau started 12th after setting fast time and had to charge through the 22-car pack for the win. Dean Woolford of Fortesque led the first half of the contest as Mongeau and a host of others charged to the front. Mongeau was finally able to take the lead just past halfway and then held off point leader Scott Riggleman of Manchester to the finish. Brick’s Ronnie Mullen, Andrew Krause of Holmdel and Woolford wrapped up the top five.

“This win is for my mother,” Mongeau said. “She has been cancer free for a year now. This has been a great night for me and everyone who supports me.”

Former champion Trevor Alspach of Willingboro raced to his first win of the year in the 25-lapper for the Legend Cars. Howell’s Robert French was a close second, while point leader Derek Hopkinson of Toms River, Rob Hyer of South Amboy and Malcolm Campbell of Eatontown completed the top five.

Defending champ Howie Conk of Jackson won his fourth race in five attempts in the Street Stock 25-lap main event. Nick Shaw of Chatham, Phil Fortuna of Toms River, Mike Tillett of Bayville and Keansburg’s Jerry Stanzione were second through fifth.

Wall Stadium roars back into action this Saturday night (June 2) with the Street Stocks in the spotlight in a 50-lap main event. The Modifieds will return for a 40-lap main event, while the Sportsman Cars and Street Stocks will also see action. The Legend Cars have the night off.

Pit gates will open at 2:00 p.m.; with practice starting at 3:30 p.m. Grandstands will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first qualifying event takes the green flag at 6:00 p.m. Main events are scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on most Saturdays and Sundays during the summer months. The speedway is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B.
