With a somewhat somber mood effecting almost every competitor and crew person at the speedway due to the recent passing of auto racing supporter Don Ling, Freehold’s Steven Reed raced to his second win of the year in the 40-lapper for the Modified stock cars at Wall Stadium Saturday night. Reed and every other main event winner on the night dedicated his victory to the 70-year-old Brick resident who passed away Wednesday after a courageous battle with cancer.

Shaun Carrig of Little Falls was the first leader of the Modified contest, but Reed quickly throttled into second and went after the leader. With five laps down Carrig and Reed raced side-by-side before Reed eventually edged into the top spot a few laps later. Defending Modified champ Anthony Sesely of Matawan was next to struggle past Carrig and he then began to chase Reed.

Although a couple of late race caution flags tightened the field, Reed held his ground to take the win, while Sesely was the runner-up. Carrig, Shanon Mongeau of Farmingdale and Freehold’s Chas Okerson completed the top five.

“The car was very fast tonight thanks to my dad and the crew, but anyone who has been here knows that it is a fast car,” Reed said after the win. “Most of all I want to dedicate this win to Don Ling. He has helped this sport and everyone involved in it more than anyone can know.’

The Street Stock raced in a pair of 25-lappers with plenty of action in each. The first race saw defending champ Howie Conk of Jackson and Carl Thomas of Tinton Falls fight for the lead late in the race before contact was made. Nick Shaw of Chatham came out on top in this one as he missed the tangle and grabbed the win. Bill Vanderveen of Beachwood ended up second, while Thomas, Conk and Bayville’s Mike Tillett wrapped up the top five.

In the second Street Stock 25-lapper, Conk again fought with Thomas before taking the win. Tillett, Vanderveen and Shaw were third through fifth.

Veteran racer Robert Sutphin of Brick battled two young lions to win the 30-lapper for the Sportsman cars. First Sutphin had to battle past Kenny Van Wickle of Manasquan to take the lead before holding off the hard charging Eric Mauriello of Howell for the win. Charlie Kremer III of Toms River, Holmdel’s Andrew Krause and Bruce Roslin of Little Egg Harbor were third through fifth.

Scott Riggleman of Manchester raced through the pack and took the lead with 10 laps down to win the 25-lapper for the Factory Stocks. Brick’s Ronnie Mullen was second at the stripe, with Marty Van Druten of Toms River, early leader Rob Hurley of Wall and Steve Michel of Egg Harbor rounding out the top five.

Wall Stadium roars back into action this Saturday night (June 9) with the Legend Cars in the spotlight in a 50-lap main event. The Modifieds will return for a 40-lap main event, while the Sportsman Cars and Street Stocks will also see action. The Factory Stocks have the night off.

Pit gates will open at 2:00 p.m.; with practice starting at 3:30 p.m. Grandstands will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first qualifying event takes the green flag at 6:00 p.m. Main events are scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

On Friday evening starting at 5:00 p.m., a free to the public custom car show is scheduled to run until dark. A highlight of the evening is when the custom cars in attendance have the opportunity to take paced laps around the famous high-banked speedway.

Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on most Saturdays and Sundays during the summer months. The speedway is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B. The speedway hotline number is 732-681-6400, while CKMotorsports@aol.com is the track’s email address. More information is also available at www.wallspeedwayracing.com.
