SCHERER TOP RoC SPECIAL, STEFFENHAGEN WINS NYSSUPER STOCK SERIES CHALLENGE

Daren Scherer, from Binghamton, NY, won the 75-lap Race of Champions Modified special last Friday at Spencer Speedway. The RoC Modifieds visit Spencer just once a year. Following Scherer across the finish line were Billy Putney from East Aurora, Chuck Hossfeld from Ransomville, Karl Hehr from Cheektowaga and Jan Leaty from Williamson.

The 75-lap feature was marred by a number of accidents, including three straight original starts all called back by one incident or another. Finally a single file start was used to get the race rolling.

The worst accident came on lap 64, when Rusty Smith slammed the front stretch wall destroying his number 34 modified. He emerged uninjured. More of the RoC can be found in the RoC press release.

In other racing action, Jim Steffenhagen won a special 25-lap NYS Super Stock Challenge race featuring extra pay and special awards. Sixteen cars turned out for this special event. Steffenhagen passed leader Jay Mudra on a lap 16 restart following a spin out by Joe Miller, to take over the lead. Mudra’s race took a turn for the worse when he too lost his car and spun through the infield grass exiting the second turn.

The final yellow of the race came on lap 22 when Terry Cheetham, Tommy Catalano, Bobby Lippa Jr., Willie Strusz and Steve Malin were all involved in a first turn melee.

From that point on he was never challenged. Billy Gleason finished second some ten car lengths behind Steffenhagen. Rounding out the top five finishers were: Kris Hillegeer, Mitchell Wright and Willie Strusz. Steffenhagen picked up $500 for the win plus $275 in lap bonus for leading the final nine laps.

Dan Scott earned $100 for being the R.C. Welding Supply Hard Charger of the race, starting in 15th and finishing 7th.. Jay Mudra won an additional $100 from the Sodas Microd Club for leading at halfway mark.

In Super Six action last year’s divisional champion, Tim Faro, came home the winner. Faro was later disqualified in tech for not running the right tires. That moved Brian Hallett into the win, his third straight victory of the year.

Faro had been battling hard with Hallett over the final five circuits for the lead. Erick Ruffell, Adam VanHall, Van Grant and Brandon Allen rounded out the top five finishers.

Only one yellow flag slowed the Super Six race, when Hugh Vine slowed to a stop in the fourth turn on lap five.

In Auto Value Scorpion Four Cylinder racing Alison Knoepfler powered her way BY Austin Montgomery on lap five, to win her second feature of the season. Both Knoepfler and Montgomery broke free and began to build a ten car advantage when Mike Bradshaw broke free of the field and tried to close the gap in the final laps.

A yellow on lap 10 following contact with the second turn wall by Jennifer Dennie bunched the field together. A three way battle ensued between Montgomery, Bradshaw and Zach Willis for the runner up position. On lap 12, Bradshaw gained the spot but was not able to catch Knoepfler in the closing laps. Early leader Austin Montgomery came home in third followed by Willis and rookie Shawn Frarey.

The INEX Legend cars made their second appearance of the season. Their 15-lap main event had to be red flagged on the first lap when Alexandria Smith’s car went up in smoke down the front stretch. Once the race got under way, Brad Salatino took over the lead. Salatino was passed on the low side down the backstretch on lap three by Bryce Norton. Salatino was now battling to keep second with Carl Vilardo IV and Kevin DeBrakeleer. Vilardo made good on his bid for second and then ducked low in the third turn to take the lead from Norton. Vilardo cruised home for the win with DeBrakeleer on his rear bumper in second. Norton, Brett Coon and Salatino rounded out the top five finishers.
