Popular veteran stock car driver Ken Woolley, Jr. jumped to the lead early and raced on to claim the victory in the 40-lap Modified stock car main event at Wall Stadium Saturday night. It was the first win of the season for the Howell speedster.

Woolley rocketed to the lead at the outset with Freehold’s Steven Reed close behind. With an early season battle between this duo fresh in the minds of many in attendance, most fans were on the edge of their seat as the event wore on. Later in the event Woolley was able to stretch an advantage over Reed as Reed also drove away from the rest of the pack. The battle for third then became the one to watch in the closing laps as Farmingdale’s Shanon Mongeau held on for third, with Freehold’s Chas Okerson fourth and Anthony Sesely of Matawan fifth.

“I have to thank Dick and Robert Barney for this opportunity,” an emotional Woolley said in the winner’s circle. “I also have to thank Don Ling and I have to dedicate this win to his memory. Don Ling has done more for this sport than anyone will ever know.”

Mr. Ling passed away after a long courageous battle with cancer on May 30 at the age of 70. He was a Brick resident.

Invader Mike Alcaro was lured to Wall Stadium on Saturday night by the offering of Twin 25 lap Legend Cars main events. He was rewarded for his visit handsomely as he swept both halves of the twin bill. In the first race Alcaro out dueled eventual runner-up Todd McCollum, while Zack Alspach, Malcolm Campbell and Brian Spencer completed the top five.

In the second Legend Cars 25-lapper, Alcaro was again the top man over point leader Derek Hopkinson, McCollum, Casey Robicheau and Spencer.

Eric Mauriello of Howell came from ninth on the grid to win the 30-lap feature for the Sportsman cars. Kenny Van Wickle of Manasquan was the impressive leader through most of the race, but Mauriello was able to slip into the lead on lap 17 and then never looked back. Zack Alspach of Willingboro was the runner-up, while Van Wickle, Andrew Krause of Holmdel and Brick’s Robert Sutphin wrapped up the top five.

Point leader Howie Conk of Jackson tracked down early leader Phil Fortuna of Toms River to win the Street Stock 25-lap feature race. Fortuna later left the event with a flat tire, handing second spot over to Nick Shaw of Chatham. Beachwood’s Bill Vanderveen, Mike Tillett of Bayville and Jack Sayegh were third through fifth.

Racing returns to Wall Stadium this Saturday night (June 16) with six divisions in racing action. The Modifieds are set for a 40-lap main event, while the Sportsman Cars, Legend Cars, Factory Stocks and Street Stocks will also see action. Also on the card will be the visiting Three Quarter Midgets.

Pit gates will open at 2:00 p.m.; with practice starting at 3:30 p.m. Grandstands will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first qualifying event takes the green flag at 6:00 p.m. Main events are scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
