Current point leader and defending driving champion Anthony Sesely stretched his advantage in the season-long title race by a few more markers when he won the 40-lap Modified stock car main event at Wall Stadium Saturday night. It was the second win of the year for the Manalapan veteran and sets him up as a favorite in the June 30 Garden State Classic here.
Sesely lined up sixth for the test as Harry Schaeffer of Careret jumped out to the early lead. Lavallette’s Adam LaCicero soon took command as Sesely quickly climbed to second spot. When front runners LaCicero and Howell’s Ken Woolley, Jr. touched in the fourth turn to bring out a caution, Sesely was able to take advantage of a restart to rocket to the lead.
Although Frank Boardwick III of Union Beach chased the leader the rest of the way, Sesely was up to the task of notching the win. Shaun Carrig of Little Falls, Brick’s Shawna Ingraham and Chas Okerson of Freehold completed the top five.
“My father works with me every step of the way and makes this all possible,” Sesely said after the race. “That makes it kind of nice to win here on Father’s Day weekend. This win is for my father. He really deserves it.”
Rookie Sportsman driver Kenny Van Wickle of Manasquan enjoyed an emotional victory lane celebration after taking his first 30-lap win Saturday night. Van Wickle battled with Freehold’s Elliott Wohl until the halfway mark when Wohl spun from contention. From then on it was all Van Wickle to the finish line with Holmdel’s Andrew Krause, Brick’s Robert Sutphin, Zack Alspach of Willingboro and Wohl completing the top five.
“This car was wrecked so bad a few weeks ago and these people on this team fixed it better than new,” Van Wickle said after the win. “My dad and mom are my biggest supporters. This is all for them.”
Brick’s Ronnie Mullen came from seventh on the starting grid to win the 25-lapper for the Factory Stocks. Steve West of Howell and Jim Downey of Cliffwood Beach took turns leading the first half before Mullen raced to the top with ten laps remaining. Mullen then raced the rest of the way for the win, with West second, Manchester’s Scott Riggleman third, Farmingdale’s Shanon Mongeau fourth and Holmdel’s Andrew Krause fifth.
The early season’s two biggest Legend Cars winners, Derek Hopkinson of Toms River and Mike Alcaro of Fredon, battled for the victory right to the finish line in the small car 25 lapper before Hopkinson took the win by inches. Alcaro was the runner-up, while Wall’s Robert French, Zack Alspach of Willingboro and Eatontown’s Malcolm Campbell wrapped up the top five.
Howie Conk of Jackson continued to impress Saturday night as he won another 25-lapper for the Street Stocks. Finishing second behind the current point leader and defending champion was Nick Shaw of Chatham, while Bayville’s Mike Tillett, Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg and Glen Conk of Jackson wrapped up the top five.
Jon Gambuti of Point Pleasant won the 25-lapper for the visiting TQ Midgets. Ian Cumens, Ryan Tidman, Frank Fisher and Buddy Sloed were second through fifth.
The stock cars get this weekend off as the touring pros from the Formula Drift Series invade Wall Stadium for a two-day championship event. For more information on the Friday and Saturday action visit formulad.com.
Stock car racing returns to Wall Stadium on Saturday night June 30. The Modifieds in the spotlight in the annual Garden State Classic. The Sportsman Cars, Legend Cars and Factory Stocks will also see action. The Street Stocks will have the night off.
Pit gates will open at 2:00 p.m.; with practice starting at 3:30 p.m. Grandstands will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first qualifying event takes the green flag at 6:00 p.m. Main events are scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on most Saturdays and Sundays during the summer months. The speedway is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B.
