Faro Picks Up Double Points

Owego’s Tony Hanbury topped the 35-lap Spencer/Chemung/ Holland Challenge at Spencer Speedway last Friday. In the double point Super Six race, Tim Faro took the victory. Other winners on the night included Dave Bradshaw in the Auto Value Scorpion division and Mitchell Wright in the Super Stocks. A special vintage demonstration was put on by the Atlantic Coast Old Timers group. Two midgets, three sprints and an Indianapolis roadster were on hand.

“There are a few people we are missing,” stated Hanbury form the NASCAR Modified victory lane. He listed his father and Don Pratt and dedicated the race in their memory. “This car wasn’t the greatest. I had nothing for Andy (Lewis) until he got lose and I was able to make the pass.”

The race saw four yellow flag periods, all for minor spinouts. The final yellow came with just five laps remaining, setting up a dash to the checkers.

Andy Lewis grabbed the early lead in the 35-lap main event with Hanbury on his heels. On lap 23, Hanbury was able to duck beneath Lewis to take the lead. Hanbury held fast to take the victory. He was followed across the finish line by NASCAR Track Point leader Rusty Smith, Amy Catalano, Matt Lees, and Kevin Timmerman. Lees would later be disqualified in tech for a ride height violation, moving last week’s feature winner, Mike Leaty, into fifth.

Hanbury became the third different feature winner in the three races run at Spencer in Spencer/Chemung/ Holland Challenge events this season.

Tim Faro picked up the 20-lap feature victory in the Super Six division. It was double point night for this division, with top point leaders running in the top five, most of the race.

Faro ducked low in the third turn to take the lead on lap five, passing early leader Brandon Allen. Brian Hallett followed Faro through the hole to take second. He then began to hound Faro for the lead, as these two broke away from the rest of the field.

Faro would beat out his main weekly competitor, Brian Hallett. Hallett came home second followed by Brandon Allen, Erick Ruffell, Van Grant. Grant actually finished in four but was moved back to fifth after completing a pass for the position in the infield grass.

Faro dedicated his win to a 23 year old friend named Derek who passed away this past week.

Mitchell Wright, from Henrietta, bounced back with a feature win after wrecking in Monte Carlo the week before. The top three cars ran under a blanket for most of the 15-lap main event. Terry Cheetham, Steve Malin and Brandon Larner filled out the top four finishers. The race would run green-to-checkers.

The Auto Value Scorpion 15-lap main event saw Dave Bradshaw start at the front and stay there the entire distance.
“Yes, I am the oldest Bradshaw brother,” stated Dave in victory lane. “It’s great to start up front as these cars in this division are so evenly matched and it’s hard to pass.”

Joe Clark finished second, running close on Bradshaw’s heels. Russell Peets, Zach Willis and Bro Bradshaw rounded out the top five finishers.

An accident in the first turn on the initial start sidelined Beth Dennie who exited the track in the first turn. After that the yellow flag was never seen the entire distance.

The Atlantic Old Times were on hand with their vintage midgets, sprinters and an Indianapolis roadster. Bill Goodfellow, from Windsor, NY took the “race demonstration” win. The race was checkered flag on lap eight of ten, when George Favreau slowed to a stop off the backstretch in his vintage sprint car.

SPENCER SPINS: A large crowd was on hand for the second “Pack the Track” promotion….The Kids’ Bicycle races took place this past Friday. The kids were divided into four age categories to compete. In the five and under class Matthew Chelini, from Ontario, NY took the win over a very large group of kid. The six to eight years saw Glen Bull, Williamson, NY, take the win by a mere few feet. The nine to eleven years saw Penfield’s Tim Dobretsov claim the trophy. Finally in the twelve and over class, Derek Duffy took the victory.

This Friday will see Twin 25-lappers for the NASCAR Modifieds. The Super Stocks, Super Sixes and Auto Value Scorpions will also be in competition. At intermission a special promotion, “Kids, Coins & Candy”, will take place on the front stretch. $50 in nickels and 20 pounds of candy will be dumped on the front stretch for the kids to pick up. Race time will start at 7:30 p.m.

Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester, NY, along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson. Spencer Speedway is the local “NASCAR Place to Race” for Central New York. Points earned each week at Spencer are counted into the national NASCAR Whelen All-American Points.
