It was a caution-filled event as competitors from hundreds of miles away came to try their hand at
racing at “the Madhouse.” The Strutmasters.com 199 for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour saw 13 cautions, plenty of wrecks, and the
aggressive style of racing that Bowman Gray Stadium is known for.

And when the checkered flag waved, George Brunnhoelzl III of West Babylon, NY made history by claiming the victory.
Stadium regular Burt Myers of Walnut Cove qualified on the pole with Brunnhoelzl turning the second fastest lap and starting on the
outside front-row.

Myers claimed the top spot during the initial start and defended his lead during the first three double-file restarts. But on the fourth
restart, Brunnhoelzl powered ahead on the outside to grab the lead.

The 09 of Brunnhoelzl seemed impossible to stop, fending off Burt Myers and Ryan Preece of Berlin, CT. But Myers and Preece battled
fiercely with each other for second as they swapped position back and forth.

Then a long stretch of green flag laps allowed Brunnhoelzl to put an impressive distance between him and the rest of the field. As Myers
and Preece nursed their tires, Brunnhoelzl pulled nearly a straightaway ahead.

“We had a really good car. When we had a green flag, we were awesome,” said Brunnhoelzl.

Danny Bohn of Huntersville fought his way forward to challenge Myers for third. The two bumped and Myers fell back. Myers then gave Bohn
a strong nudge to the rear bumper, and Bohn spun. “The way I see it, it was just good hard racing,” said Myers. “You come to Bowman Gray, and
you’re going to get dirty.”

Preece then began to apply the heat to Brunnhoelzl, slipping inside and bumping the left rear of Brunnhoelzl. During a restart, Preece
slipped past Brunnhoelzl on the outside, but Brunnhoelzl quickly delivered a stout tap that sent Preece sliding out of the lead. “I knew he was
there, and that it would be a battle,” said Brunnhoelzl. “From what everyone says, that’s Bowman Gray racing.”

During the final lap, Preece had a run-in with Andy Seuss of Hampstead, NH – both wrecked, allowing Tim Brown of Rural Hall to grab a
second place finish. “We drove down in there, and I saw the 11 [of Seuss] and the 41 [of Preece] racing really hard,” said Brown. “They went off
into three there, and they washed up the racetrack. I just cut her left, stood on the gas, and wound up second.”

Brunnhoelzl’s victory was a historic achievement – making him the 124th winner of a featured event at Bowman Gray Stadium. That adds him
to the list of such legendary winners as Richard Petty, Junior Johnson, and Glen Wood.

“It’s an accomplishment - to be on the same list as those guys is incredible,” said Brunnhoelzl. “Something you can always wish for, but
it’s tough to make it happen. So we made it happen tonight, and that’s a feat within itself.”

Cole Powell of Mt. Brydges, Ontario finished third, with Jason Myers of Walnut Cove taking fourth.

In the 40-lap race for the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Zack Clifton of Walkertown grabbed the checkered flag after rubbing
fenders with Michael Adams of Yadkinville. Rich Hunter of Winston-Salem claimed second, and Taylor Branch of Lewisville finished third.

Johnny Arnder of Mount Airy brought home the victory in the 20-lapper for the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series. John Holleman of
Winston-Salem and David Sumner of Trinity finished second and third.

In the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series, A.J. Sanders of Mocksville took the win – his sixth victory this season.

After curfew led to the postponement of the East Coast Flathead Fords on Friday, Johnny Johnson brought home the win on Saturday.
