Even with inclement in the forecast for Mountain Speedway’s Saturday portion of the 13th annual “King of the Mountain” weekend, plenty of racers came out for the extra distance, double points events with hopes of wearing the winner’s crown at the end of the day. In a wild and eventful Sport Modified feature, Rusty Smith of Oxford, NY remained patient and got the race lead with 18 laps remaining to claim the $2,000 prize. For the second straight year, Paul Morgan, Jr. of Mountaintop took the victory in the Factory Stock division and Pete Verwys of Stroudsburg pulled the same feat in Four Cylinder action. Kyle Soper held off Brendon Bock to notch the INEX Legends victory and Nick Harnage scored the INEX Bandolero victory.

Dave Brigati time trialed quickest prior to the start of the 100-lap Sport Modified feature, but Jason Hearne pulled the pole position during the redraw. With the green flag out, Hearne led the opening lap over Brigati, Eric Mauiello, Paul Frantz and Todd Baer.

The yellow flag flew on lap seven when Frantz spun from the top five in turns three and four. Green flag racing resumed and Hearne continued to set the pace over Brigati.

With the top two the same, the yellow flag waved on lap 34 and both Hearne and Brigati headed to the pits for tires. The change of events gave the lead to Mauiello. Kevin Orlando held second, followed by Baer, Tommy Wanick and Anthony Sesely.

Nick Pecko cracked the top five and then climbed to third on lap 42 and then tried to reel in Frantz, who had climbed to second. With 50 laps complete, Mauiello continued to set the pace and both Hearne and Brigati broke back into the top five.

Hearne showed some muscle and got by Frantz and Pecko to move to second on lap 59. He then reeled in the leader and took the top spot on lap 63. Sesely followed through for second.

Sesely jumped to the outside of Hearne for the top spot and the pair ran side by side for plenty of laps before Sesely was able to lead lap 80 by a bumper. In an attempt to regain the lead, Hearne drove into turns one and too a little to hard and the end result was a tandem spin by both he and Sesely. Both drivers were forced to restart from the tail end of the field and Rusty Smith, who had been quiet all race long, moved to the lead.

Smith treated the final laps like the last and cruised to the victory. Brigati was satisfied with his runner up effort, which secured him his second straight championship in the division. Baer, Orlando and Frantz completed the top five.

Stephanie Moyer started from the pole position in the 40-lap Factory Stock feature, but Dan Pawlicki led the first circuit over Matt Mattern, Jr, Keith Frankenfield, Mark Martini and Rich Paciotti.

With six laps complete, Paciotti overtook Martini, who held the third spot at the time. Four laps later Martini regained the position and set his sights on Frankenfield, who ran in second.

Frankenfield took his turn at the race lead and Martini buzzed through for second. Martini set up Frankenfield for a lap 15 pass, but following a restart after a quick lap 16 yellow, Frankenfield got into the leader, forcing both drivers to the tail end of the field for the restart.

With Pawlicki back in the lead on lap 16, Morgan ran in the second spot, but not for long. In one lap, Morgan grabbed the race lead and began to pull away from the field.

With 19 laps remaining, the red flag was displayed when Martini and Frankenfield tangled off turn two. With what appeared to be substantial damage, Frankenfield was done for the evening.

Morgan was flawless in the closing laps and went on to claim his second straight win in the prestigious event. Paciotti finished in the second spot and claimed his first division title. Randy Schlenker, Pawlicki and Martini completed the top five.

Heat race victories went to Dan Pawlicki and Rich Paciotti.

Frank Hughes started from the pole position and led the opening circuit of the 40-lap Four Cylinder event over Scott Adams, John Smith, Noah Fassman and Jay Skupski.

Following a lap two yellow, Adams took command and Hughes slipped to second. Pete Verwys cracked the top five on lap five and then battled with Fassman for third.

With 20 laps in the book, Adams continued to lead, with Hughes, Fassman, Verwys and Kenny Kleppinger in tow, but that all changed six laps later when Hughes spun in turns one and two, due to oil on the speedway. Unfortunately for Hughes, the oil was from his own car.

Green flag racing resumed and Adams continued to set the pace. Verwys overtook Fassman for second and then hounded the leader.

Adams did all that he could to fend off Verwys, who took command with four laps remaining to claim his second straight King of the Mountain verdict over Adams. Fassman, who began the afternoon third in points, claimed the division championship after Skupski and Hughes had misfortune. Banashefski and Kleppinger completed the top five.

Frank Hughes and Scott Adams earned heat race victories.

Alexandria Smith started from the pole position in the 30-lap INEX Legends feature but Kyle Soper led the first lap over Smith, Kevin Nowak, Bryan Kelly and Scott Hubler.

Nowak climbed to second after one lap was complete and with three laps in the books, Kyle Ellwood grabbed the fourth spot from Kelly. He then motored by Smith for third.

Meanwhile, Brendon Bock, who started in the thirteenth spot, grabbed the fifth spot. With eight laps complete, Bock took third from Ellwood and then got by Nowak for second with seven laps remaining.

Bock tried several moved on Soper for the lead and the duo came off the final turn for the checkers side by side. Soper earned the victory and Bock settled for second. Ellwood, Nowak and Kelly rounded out the top five.

Despite having engine problems during the event, Hubler had enough points to win the championship over Bock.

Heat race victories went to Kevin Nowak and Kyle Soper.
