Well over 200 race cars jammed Waterford
Speedbowl’s pit area on Saturday for its Finale Weekend of racing.
Qualifying racing for thirteen divisions along with eight main events took
place over the day, with six more races being set for Sunday at the track.
Taking NASCAR Whelen All-American Series victories Saturday were Corey
Hutchings of Salem in the Street Stocks and David Webb of Nashville, TN in
the SK Light Modifieds. Duane Noll of Monroe won an entertaining Outlaw
Stock feature, Dylan Duhaime of Loudon, NH was the winner of the NEMA Lite
series feature and Ivoryton racer Mark Panaroni won the visiting Northeast
Mini Stock Tour race. Rounding out feature winners included Eric Finkbein
Jr. of Manchester in the Super X-Cars, Scott Limkemann of East Lyme in the
X-Cars and Rene Morgillo of Niantic in the Bandoleros.
Paul French of Andover led the SK Light Modified field to the green flag
for their 25-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series feature race. French,
the point leader in the division looking to clinch back-to-back
championships, had Tyler Jackson of Milford, fighting for his own
championship hopes, to his outside. French held the lead but only three
laps were completed before Victoria Bergenty spun between turns one and
two to bring out the caution flag.
French led the restart while Webb worked his way to second position,
getting past Jackson. Cam McDermott of Scituate, RI moved to third
position and the top three broke away from the field. Webb made a move to
French’s inside on lap-9 to take the race lead leaving French with his
hands full as McDermott looked for a way around. On lap-13 McDermott got
to French’s inside in turn two, opening the door for several cars to
follow their way by French’s inside. French actually spun a lap later,
tangling with Chris Correll in turn one on lap-14 to return the race to
caution.
Webb got the jump over McDermott when racing resumed however was unable to
open any breathing room over him. McDermott stalked the race leader
looking for a way around, nearly getting inside of Webb on lap-22 in turn
three. Webb was able to fend of the challenge, then held on as McDermott
made a final crossover move out of turn four to the checkered flag. Webb
won the race as McDermott settled for second, while Jackson rounded out
the top three.
French was able to finish the race in tenth position, unofficially
securing him the division championship over Jackson.
In the 25-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Street Stock feature, Dan
Darnstaedt of Durham bolted out to an early lead. As he pulled away from
the field, Ted Dupre of Westbrook held second position just ahead of most
of the competition, which jockeyed for position side-by-side several rows
back. Overhead, ominous skies moved in with rain drops falling by lap-14.
The first caution flag waved as a light shower moved over the speedway.
The cars were sent off the track to wait out a brief rain delay.
When racing resumed, Josh Galvin of Franklin challenged Darnstaedt in the
outside lane. Hutchings was also in the picture, racing in third position.
Darnstaedt finally fought off Galvin’s charges on lap-18, making way for
Hutchings to move to Galvin’s inside to claim second. A lap later,
Hutchings worked his way underneath the leader on lap-19. Hutchings
cleared Darnstaedt for the lead on lap-21 before a final caution flag on
lap-24 provided one final hurdle. Hutchings mastered the restart and won
his fifth race of the year. Brandon Plemons of Uncasville rallied to
place second while Galvin finished in third.
The 25-lap Outlaw Stock feature was hard fought for much of the event for
the top spots on the track. Kevin Gambacorta of Ellington began the race
in front but Ryan Posocco of Stafford took over on lap-6. Posocco led
while Noll looked impressive, moving to second position. Noll found room
inside of Posocco to take the lead on lap-12 then held on during several
late charges by Posocco in his attempt to reclaim the lead. The final
challenge came through turns three and four on the final lap as the pair
sprinted to the checkered flag. Posocco’s last ditch effort fell just
short, as Noll took the win. Corey Casagrande of Stafford finished third
and was part of the action up front throughout.
In the 25-lap NEMA Lite series, Dylan Duhaime of Loudon, NH was awarded
the victory after apparent winner Keith Rocco of Meriden was disqualified
during post-race technical inspection. Ryan Bigelow of East Hampton
showed the way over a long stretch of green flag racing before Duhaime
used an outside move on lap-15 to take command. Rocco used the stretch of
racing to make his way into the top-five when caution waved on lap-21.
Duhaime led until Rocco powered past on lap-22. Duhaime countered with a
crossover move, however Rocco held him off and raced to the checkered
flag. It was after the race when Duhaime would be declared the winner
during inspection. Avery Stoehr of Lakeville, MA was credited with second
position and Christian Briggs of Mattapoisett, MA with third.
Finkbein won a green-to-checkered feature in the Super X-Car division,
besting the field over a 20-lap battle. He led comfortably throughout and
cruised to a career-first win at the track. Dan Butler of Waterford was
second and Kevin Moon of Exeter, RI finished third.
The X-Cars competed in a 20-lap event, won by the Wednesday night series
champion Limkemann. He held off Wayne Shifflett of Preston and Brad
Voglesong of Middletown in a race slowed by two caution periods.
Morgillo scored an impressive victory in the 20-lap Bandolero feature,
rallying late to beat out Jacob Urch of West Suffield with a stellar
outside pass. Anthony Marvin of Colchester finished third.
Sunday’s activities at the track begin with the popular Speedbowl Pit
Party. Race fans will be able to see the cars and meet the stars prior to
racing beginning at 9:30am. Following the pit party, racing will begin
shortly after noon. Sunday’s feature lineup includes 25-lap races for the
Legend Cars and NEMA Midgets along with 50-lap features for the NASCAR
Whelen All-American Series SK Modifieds®, Bob Valenti Auto Mall Late
Models, Street Stocks and Mini Stocks. The Speedbowl has reserved
Saturday, October 27th as the rain date if necessary for Sunday’s racing
card.
