After being heavily pressured by Paul Frantz and Dave Brigati in the closing laps of the Sport Modified feature Sunday at Mountain Speedway, Jason Hearne of New Egypt, NJ held his own and in doing so, won his second straight opener in the Sport modified division at the track. Prior to wheeling his Sport Modified, Brigati, of Long Island, held off last years champion, Kyle Harvell, to take the checkers in the Late Model main and Paul Morgan, Jr. of Mountaintop, PA led only the final lap en route to the Factory Stock victory. A last lap pass on Kevin Nowak propelled Brendon Bock of Franklin Square, NY to victory in the INEX legends feature.

Jason Hearne timed quickest during Saturday’s time trials and then redrew the pole position for the 4-lap Sport Modified main event. He led the opening lap over Dave Brigati, Paul Frantz, Travis Fisher and Cam Ayers.

Brigati stayed with Hearne in the early laps of the event, which was slowed just past halfway when Ayers spun in turns one and two. The cone race format was used for the event, which meant that drivers could opt for the inside or outside lane for the restart and the top five remained the same in the early going.

With Hearne still setting the pace, a quick spin brought out the yellow flag with seven laps remaining. Frantz chose the outside lane for the restart, which moved him to second. With a gallant effort over the closing laps, Frantz not only retained second, but also stayed alongside Hearne and it appeared that he had a shot at the victory.

Hearne however, didn’t budge and drove off to claim his second straight opening day victory in the division. He dedicated the win to his longtime friend, Jim Long, Jr.

Frantz and Brigati crossed the stripe side by side and Brigati took second by a mere 0.001 seconds. Fisher and Ayers completed the top five.

Kyle Harvell set the quickest Late Model time but Dave Brigati redrew the pole for the 30-lap Late Model main. He led the first circuit over Harvell, Mitch Hawk, Mark Tyson and Jim Lamoreaux.

Rick Smith cracked the top five when he got by Lamoreaux on lap six and then the yellow waved with 12 laps complete.

The drivers were able to choose their restart lane and Tyson, who ran fourth at the time, moved to second by choosing the outside lane.

Brigati continued to set the pace on the final restart and Harvell and Hawk moved by Tyson to advance their positions. Although Harvell gave the leader a small shot on the final lap, Brigati kept it straight to claim his first victory in the division since 2011. Harvell, Hawk, Lamoreaux and Tyson completed the top five.

Matt Mattern, Jt. Time trialed quested and started from the pole position in the 20-lap Factory Stock feature. He led the opening lap over Paul Morgan, Jr. and Kendal Faulk.

With Mattern still showing the way, Stephanie Moyer grabbed the third spot from Faulk on lap 11, but she lost that spot with a spin in turn two with five laps remaining.

Morgan lined up in second alongside Mattern for the restart and the pair ran door to door for most of the closing laps. On the final circuit, Mattern got sideways out of turn two and nearly had it corrected three quarters of the way down the backstretch, but spun when Morgan attempted to find a way around the leader.

By leading that one lap, Morgan took the checkered for the opening day win. Faulk and Moyer finished a career-best second and third respectively.

Brandon DeBrakeleer led the INEX Legends drivers to the drop of the green flag in the 20-lap feature, but Kevin Nowak overtook him for the top spot before a lap was scored. Nowak crossed the strip first to complete lap one with DeBrakeleer, Brendon Bock, Alexandria Smith and Brad Lowmaster in tow.

With Nowak still in command and with Bock now in second, the yellow waved on lap 11 when DeBrakeleer, who was running in third, slowed on the front stretch. When green flag racing resumed Nowak continued to lead. Lowmaster held second, followed by Bock, Tony Hanbury and Mike Carroll, Jr.

Bock got by DeBrakeleer for second in the late stages of the event and set his sights on Nowak for the lead. On the final lap, Bock got alongside the leader and made the pass stick for the victory. Nowak settled for second, followed by Lowmaster, DeBrakeleer and Carroll.
