Tim Brown of Rural Hall grabbed the first checkered flag for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series on Saturday – a strong start to his mission of claiming his
10th Modified title this season. But he’ll be up against the rest of the field at the Madhouse – the best of the best hoping to grab the championship for themselves.
Burt Myers of Walnut Cove is the name that immediately comes up as some of the stoutest competition for Brown. Myers is a five-time champ and currently ranked fifth on the all-time win list for the
Modifieds, so he’s no stranger to Winner’s Circle.
However, Myers had what for him was a disappointing 2012. He finished fifth in the points and won only twice at the Stadium. But anything could happen in 2013: After a mid-season slump last year,
Myers claimed the checkered in the last race of 2012 – getting to the point where he could declare that his #1 car was back and ready.
You don’t have to look far on the family tree to see the next rival that Tim Brown will have to face for the championship. Burt’s younger brother, Jason Myers, had his best season ever in 2012 and is off to
a strong start in 2013. Although he was winless last year, a consistent string of high finishes placed him second in the points.
And already this season, Jason Myers has proved he’s a force to be reckoned with. He was the fastest qualifier for the opening Hayes Jewelers 200 – the only qualifier faster than Brown. He also finished
right on the bumper of Tim Brown in the 200-lapper, giving Brown a run for his money in restart after restart.
To add to the mix, Jason Myers has been competing in 2013 with a brand new car – one he didn’t even roll out of the garage until the opening weekend of Stadium racing. Myers is confident that over the
next few weeks, he can continue to refine his car setup, potentially to the point where he can eclipse Brown’s #83.
Danny Bohn of Huntersville finished third on Saturday, and he’s the next name that gets tossed out as a championship contender in 2013. Like the Myerses, Bohn comes from a racing family with decades
worth of experience behind them.
Bohn finished fourth in the points last season – a feat that’s especially impressive since he missed an early night of racing to attend his brother’s wedding. We can only guess at how the season would have
shaken out otherwise.
Third in the points last season belonged to Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem, who has already shown with his aggressive moves on Saturday that he’s playing for keeps in 2013. Jonathan Brown powered
ahead on the outside row, shaking up the front of the field during the mid-parts of the 200-lapper – proving he definitely has the tenacity and the desire to be a champion at the Madhouse.
And this is just a sampling of the competition that awaits Tim Brown for the championship this year. John Smith of Mount Airy and Brian Loftin of Lexington turned in strong performances on Saturday.
Plus, you can never count out the former champions such as Junior Miller of Sandy Ridge or Robert Jeffreys of Wallburg.
The battle for the championship will continue this Saturday night at the Stadium – it’s $2 Ladies’ Night. All women get in for only two bucks to see racing for the Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stock,
and Stadium Stock Divisions. And there will be the sliding thrills of the always wild 109 U-Pull-It Skid Race.
