With a track as tight and challenging as Bowman Gray Stadium, the race for the championship is often decided in the blink of an eye.
Such was the case for Tim Brown of Rural Hall and Jason Myers of Walnut Cove on Saturday as they flew into a multiple car pileup, damaging their points totals as much as their cars.
During a double-file restart, a fight for position at the head of the field led to almost the entire outside row being left with nowhere to go except into the guard rail. Almost a dozen cars were mangled,
and Robbie Brewer’s car even flipped upside-down. All drivers were unhurt.
Brown, who is the defending champion of the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series and entered the race leading in the points, headed back to the pits where his crew feverishly worked on quick repairs.
Jason Myers’s crew flew into action as well to try and save his second place point ranking.
“It stinks to wreck in the first few laps here and fall out with a car capable of winning the race,” said Brown, who chooses to keep his head up about the matter. “We’ll go home, unload it right now, and
start tearing it apart to fix it. We’ll come back next week and try to be the best we can be.”
Brown ended up finishing four laps down – but with so much of the field taken out, that was good enough for 10th place. Jason Myers finished 17th having lost 56 laps.
The momentum belonged instead to Burt Myers of Walnut Cove and John Smith of Mount Airy. Myers claimed the checkered, boosting him into the points lead. John Smith’s third place finish moves him
into the second place spot on the points ladder.
However, at this point in the season the points lead may be as much of a liability as anything: the Stadium runs qualifying laps in order of points, putting the points leaders out on the track when it is in
its least desirable shape for qualifying speed.
“At this point, all the points lead means is that I have to go out first qualifying,” said Myers. “But that’s the preferred spot – to be up front – that way it’s on you to win or to lose it.”
In the Classic Muscle Sportsman Series, Barry Edwards of Pinnacle finishes second to move up to the points lead. Walkertown resident Derek Stoltz’s 13th place finish drops him down to a close second
in the points – only two points behind Edwards.
Whitney Clifton of Walkertown leaps up to tie David Creed of Mount Airy for the points lead in the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series. Doug Wall of Pfafftown grabbed the checkered in Saturday’s
annual 50-lapper – their longest race of the year – to move up to third in the points.
Rain delay caused the postponement of the second Stadium Stock race of last event, meaning that the points battles won’t be updated until that race is completed this Saturday.
And this Saturday will be a true test for all the competitors: it will be a Double Points Night. Each division will be battling for double the normal points, so even more is at stake.
The Classic Muscle Sportsman Series will race in the Whelen Sportsman 100 – their longest and most prestigious race of the year. Also on the schedule are twin 25s for the Modifieds plus racing for the
Street Stock and Stadium Stock divisions.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, qualifying for the Sportsman begins at 6:00, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night.
