Stock car driver Steven Reed became the first repeat Modified stock car winner of the season Saturday night at Wall Stadium. It was the 16th career win for the Freehold veteran.

Former Street Stock champion John McCormack of Wall jumped to the lead at the outset of the 40-lap lap race while Reed and a host of others charged to the front. Reed arrived in the runner-up spot just before halfway and then shadowed the leader for several circuits.

Headed toward the 30-lap mark Reed drove into the outside lane and raced side-by-side with McCormack. The duo then touched nerf bars on lap 31 with McCormack spinning as a result. Reed then raced on to the victory while Eric Mauriello of Howell, who also raced from deep in the field, finished second. Chas Okerson of Freehold, who contended the entire race, was third, while Christian LaCicero of Lavallette and Oakland’s Chris Hamilton completed the top five.

“I guess we were both just going for the same spot on the track,” Reed said of the contact between his car and McCormack’s. “I feel bad that it happened. John will get his wins because his car is very fast.”

Brick’s Robert Sutphin raced into the lead at the outset and then paced every lap to win the companion 30-lapper for the Sportsman racers. Former champion Kevin Eyres of Colts Neck moved into second in the early going and then challenged Sutphin to the checker flag. Brothers Zack and Trevor Alspach, both of Willingboro, were third and fourth with Andrew Krause of Holmdel completing the top five.

The Legend Cars were in the spotlight in a pair of 20-lap main events. Howell’s Robert French won the first race over Trevor Alspach, South Amboy’s Rob Hyer, Zack Alspach and Brian Spencer of Edison. Trevor Alspach won the second Legend Cars main event over French, Zack Alspach, Hyer and Spencer.

Brick’s Joe Mongeau won the 25-lap Factory Stock feature race, taking the lead just past the halfway point. Ronnie Mullen of Brick finished second while Steve Michel of Egg Harbor City was third. Scott Riggleman of Manchester and Wall’s Roy Farfel wrapped up the top five.

Beachwood’s Todd Pilla was the winner of the 25-lapper for the 4 Cylinder racers over Mike Wahl of East Islip, N.Y., Wall’s Brien Crosby, Cole Ormsbee of Wall and Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg.

Mike Wolcott won the 15-lap exhibition race for mechanics.

Stock car racing continues at Wall Stadium this Saturday night June 15 with six divisions in action on an evening dedicated to fathers. Special gifts for “Dad’s Night” and $5 off the admission price for the fathers will be offered.

Modifieds, Sportsman, Limited Late Models, Factory Stocks and 4 Cylinder racers will see main event action. The touring TQ Midgets will also be on the card.

Pit gates will open at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday; with practice starting at 3:30 p.m. Grandstands will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first qualifying event takes the green flag at 6:00 p.m. Main events are scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
