CAPTURING TQ MIDGET & SPORTSMAN SUMMER SLAM 100 WINS

Mother Nature has not been much of a racing fan these days and morning and early afternoon mist and drizzle threatened to shut down the show at Elegant Builders Raceway Park . However, the track crew worked hard to keep the track dry and the drizzle finally ceased around 5pm, eventually leading to sunshine and great racing weather. On tap for the night was the Sportsman Summer Slam 100, the Big 10 Super Stock Series, the Street Stocks, 4 Cylinders, and After Hours Imaging TQ Midgets in a “ Battle of the Border”

The first feature of the night was the After Hours Imaging TQ Midgets who took to the EBRP ¼ mile inner oval for a 30 lap event. Timex Morgan, Andy Nye, Andy Jankowiak, and Arik McGruder brought the field to the green flag. At the start, Morgan jumped into the lead but Jankowiak was in hot pursuit. An early yellow and ensuing restart gave Jankowiak the opportunity to grab the lead as he dove down low under Morgan and grabbed the top spot. Morgan seemed to be suffering from some handling issues as A. Nye also got by to take second. At the halfway point of the feature Jankowiak had a nice lead over second place Nye, who in turn, had a considerable lead over the rest of the field. As the laps clicked off, the leaders began to hit more and more lap traffic but Jankowiak held his spot and grabbed his first TQ Midget feature win of the season at EBRP.

Up next were the 4 Cylinders for their main event and it was Chris Bugenhagen and Derrick Brant bringing the field to the green flag. Bugenhagen and Brant battled for the lead but Bugenhagen held on to the top spot as Brant was stuck on the outside groove and began to fall back. Moving up were Bobby Woch, Tom LaLomia Jr., and Jayme Thompson who ran second through fourth. By lap three Woch had moved up to challenge Bugenhagen for the lead and passed him on the outside for the top spot. LaLomia followed Woch and slotted into second. At the halfway point of the 20 lap feature Woch and LaLomia held a considerable distance over third place Kevin Bainbridge, who in turn had breathing room on Thompson who ran fourth. The race stayed clean and green and LaLomia threw everything he had at Woch in an effort to get around him for the lead. Woch, however, outraced LaLomia, and captured his first career 4 Cylinder feature win.

The action shifted to the outer oval for the next feature race at the Street Stocks took to the track for their 25 lap feature event. Mike Dalfonso Jr., Heather Weber, Dennis Londos, and Jim Stein lead the field to the start and it was Dalfonso to the lead. He wasn’t alone for long though as Stein moved up to the challenge for the lead, passing Dalfonso on the outside on lap two for the lead. Dalfonso began developing mechanical issues and started to drop back through the field, while Londos, Weber, Nate Straus, Jake Lyon, TJ Cochrane, and Matt Druar raced behind leader Stein. By lap ten, Lyon and Straus had gotten around Weber and ran second and third. The first yellow flag of the race appeared on lap 11 for Jeff Whalen who had crashed into the turn 4 Thermal Foam. A double file restart ensued with Stein, Lyon, and Straus up front but racing was short lived as Cochrane brought out the second yellow flag for a flat tire. Another double file restart was called for and Stein, Lyon, Straus, Londos, Weber, Druar, Gary Bartella, and Cochrane raced to the green flag. Stein again took the lead but Lyon was right there with him and took the lead on lap 13. The top four of Lyon, Stein, Straus, and Druar ran nose to tail while Cochrane raced hard to catch up. As the laps wound down, Cochrane closed in on the leaders but up front Lyon crossed the finish line first and took his second Street Stock feature win of the season.

The visiting Big 10 Super Stock series was the next event on the nights schedule and Tom Markham, 5 time EBRP Super Stock Champion Wayne Bernhard, Mitchell Wright, Joe Mancuso, and Jay Canonico brought the field to the initial green flag. Bernhard immediately grabbed the lead but racing was short lived as the motor on Lee Sharpsteen’s car grenaded around the track, resulting in a lengthy red flag clean up delay. When racing resumed, Bernhard, Mancuso, Canonico, and Ramos were up front and Bernhard again took the lead. Mancuso moved up to challenge however with Bernhard taking the low line and Mancuso running the high groove. A yellow flag just past the halfway point of the 25 lap feature brought the field together and Bernhard, Mancuso, Canonico, and Ramos were up front. Bernhard and Mancuso traded the lead back and forth for six laps until Mancuso finally cleared Bernhard for the lead on lap 17. With a clear track, Mancuso began building a lead over the rest of the field as the laps wound down, while Ramos moved up to challenge Bernhard for second. As the checkered flags flew, it was Mancuso crossing under them first, followed by Bernhard and Ramos.

The final event of the evening was the headline Sportsman Summer Slam 100 and a mix of EBRP regulars and outsiders was on hand to race for the win. The top twelve drivers from the heats had redrawn their starting positions for the feature and Kevin Lewis, Andy Lewis, Andy Jankowiak, Jake Vernon, Moose Rutherford, and Tom MacLeod brought the rest of the field to the green flag. K. Lewis jumped into the lead but Jankowiak wasted no time in going for the lead as he moved up and by Lewis by lap three. MacLeod also moved by Lewis, slotting into the second spot, relegating Lewis to third and who faced a new challenge from Tony Hanbury for the position. A yellow flag on lap 8 brought about the first double file restart of the race with Jankowiak, MacLeod, K. Lewis, Hanbury, and Andy Lewis up front. Jankowiak again grabbed the lead with MacLeod on pursuit in second and Hanbury slotted into third. The race settled into a clean and green segment with Jankowiak building a considerable lead over MacLeod, who in turn had a large lead over Hanbury and Amy Catalano. Two yellow flags on lap 46 brought about a double file restart at the halfway point of the feature as caution laps were being counted between laps 26-74, with a maximum of five caution laps counted at a time. The restart had Jankowiak, MacLeod, Hanbury, Tommy Catalano, Amy Catalano, and Daryl Lewis Jr. up front and Jankowiak and MacLeod battled hard for the lead. Jankowiak grabbed the lead again but two more yellow flags on lap 60 and 66 brought two more double file restarts for the leaders to race through. On the second double file restart, MacLeod managed to get by Jankowiak, who seemed to struggle on the restart, and take the lead. At lap 75 MacLeod led Jankowiak, Tommy Catalano, Hanbury, and Billy Burd, who had worked his way up through the field throughout the night. With 20 laps remaining, the yellow flag appeared again as Hanbury spun coming out of turn four. MacLeod, Jankowiak, T. Catalano, Burd, and A. Catalano were prepared to start racing again but three yellow flags appeared in a row on lap 81. Once racing resumed, MacLeod and Jankowiak battled nerf bar to nerf bar for the top spot, running side by side around the track. Jankowiak finally cleared MacLeod on lap 82 and began building a lead again over the field. With ten to go Jankowiak had a healthy lead over MacLeod, Burd, and T. Catalano, with the second through fourth place drivers battling hard for position. As the laps clicked off towards 100, Jankowiak was untouchable up front and he took home his third consecutive EBRP Sportsman feature win of the season. MacLeod finished second while T. Catalano got by Burd in the closing laps to finish third.
