A little bit of luck and a hard-charging car can go a long way at Bowman Gray Stadium.
That was the magic recipe on Saturday for Burt Myers of Walnut Cove, who grabbed the checkered flag and strengthened his points lead in the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series.
When the entire field drew for starting position, Myers drew fourth. He made his way past John Lain of Lexington and Chris Fleming of Mount Airy in the early laps to get right on the bumper of race
leader Tony Black of Lexington.
During a double-file restart, Myers moved to the outside of Black to make a play at the lead. Black successfully defended his lead – a feat that made the second-year driver proud.
“Once he jumped to the outside, I knew I had to do everything other than wreck him to stay in front of him. I did, and we outran him on the restart – and we were
really happy about that,” said Black.
But as Black fought with Burt Myers, he left himself vulnerable to Jason Myers. “I drove it really hard to stay in front of him and drove it really hard when I was behind him – and I used my stuff up. I got
a little tight there at the end and Jason got by me too,” said Black.
Jason put a little friendly pressure on the bumper of brother Burt but ended up staying behind him in second. The race ended with the Myers brothers finishing one-and-two.
But good luck wasn’t on the side of Myers’s points rivals. John Smith of Mount Airy drew 17th as his starting spot, climbing his way through the field to finish in seventh. Defending Champion Tim
Brown of Rural Hall drew 14th and finished eighth, falling back a few times due to being caught on the outside groove.
Smith and Brown stay second and third in the points but lose a lot of ground to Myers. Burt soars ahead to a 20-point lead.
In the Classic Muscle Sportsman Series, Mack Little of Kernersville was another beneficiary of a little luck. He finished 12th in the first 20-lapper, but the O’Reilly Auto Parts “Madhouse Scramble” draw
moved him up to start fifth in the second race. Little battled to the head of the pack and claimed the win.
Little keeps the points lead, with Zack Clifton of Walkertown maintaining his second place ranking and inching up on Little.
Doug Wall of Pfafftown grows his points lead to an impressive 30 points in the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series. The second place finish of John Holleman of Winston-Salem moves him up to
second in the points rankings.
In the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series, Chuck Wall of Lexington continues to fight neck and neck with Jason Keaton of Mocksville. Wall grabbed the checkered on Saturday, but Keaton finished
right on his bumper in second. Keaton remains the points leader with Wall ranked second on the points ladder.
Due to his unsportsmanlike actions on Saturday, NASCAR has suspended Kenny Bost of Kernersville for three events and placed him on probation for the rest of the 2013 season.
The points battles rage on this Saturday – it’s a pair of adrenaline-packed 25-lappers for the Modifieds. Plus there will also be racing for the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions. And the
night will end with the always wild 109 U-Pull-It Skid Race.
