In honor of a former champion, friends, fans and Cargill of Hazelton came together to organize the third annual Mike Moyer, Jr. Factory Stock event Saturday at Mountain Speedway. The event was full of action and side by side racing for the lead, and in the end, Paul Morgan, Jr. of Mountaintop held off Rich Paciotti to pocket the $1,500 prize and become the third different winner of the annual event. Brian DeFebo of Berwick kept his Modified winning streak alive and cruised to his seventh win of the season and Kevin Higgins of Alden scored his second straight and third overall Street Stock victory of the year. Tony Hilliard of Hazelton grabbed his first career Four Cylinder victory during the memorable evening and Jen Adams drove to victory lane in the Four Cylinder Ladies’ race. Kerry Higgins took top honors in the Street Stock Ladies’ event.

Time trials were held prior to the start of the 100-lap Mike Moyer, Jr. Factory Stock Memorial and Matt Schlenker ran the fastest time. Schlenker then redrew the pole position for the event and led the field to the drop of the green flag.

Before a lap was scored, Schlenker and Paul Morgan, Jr. tangled in turn four and both drivers were sent to the rear of the field for the complete restart. The turn of events gave the lead to Scott Adams, but Rich Paciotti overtook him after the green flag was thrown. Adams settled into second, followed by Dan Pawlicki, Kermit Jacoby and Kendall Foulk.

With four laps complete, Pawlicki climbed into second and Jacoby followed shortly after to grab third. Meanwhile, Morgan began to climb back toward the front and moved by Jacoby for third on lap 14. Two laps later he worked under Pawlicki to claim second.

Morgan battled with Paciotti for the lead and took command for a moment on lap 23. Paciotti retook the lead on lap 26 and then Morgan fought back to regain the spot on lap 31. The pair battled side by side and neither one roughed up the other.

The yellow flag was thrown on lap 50 for a mandatory fuel stop and Stephanie Moyer, who wanted to win for her brother in the worst way, retired from the event following a solid top ten run.

When green flag back out, Morgan held the lead and Paciotti tried every line possible to take the position. Paciotti’s last chance came with 18 laps remaining when Matt Mattern, Jr. slowed and then stopped after a solid run in the top five.

Green flag racing resumed and Paciotti gave his all in the closing laps, but came up short of victory. Morgan took the win, which was his third of the season and probably the biggest of his career over Paciotti and Pawlicki. Schlenker battled back to finish fourth, followed by Jacoby.

Wayne Szerencsits started from the pole in the 30-lap Modified feature. He led the opening lap over Dan Speeney and Brian DeFebo. With two laps in the books, DeFebo climbed to second and then reeled in the leader.

DeFebo overtook Szerencsits on lap eight and settled in. meanwhile Speeney and Szerencsits battled hard for second. A handful of mid race yellows slowed the event, but not DeFebo, as he cruised to his seventh win of the season over Szerencsits, Speeney and Jarrod Nace.

After starting from the pole position, Bernie Uphold led the first circuit of the 25-lap Street Stock feature over Steve Shultz, Randy Schlenker, Howie Conk and Brian Wozniak.

Shultz pressured Uphold for the lead and following slight contact in turn three on lap six, Uphold went around. Both drivers had to restart from the rear of the field, which put Conk to the lead over Schlenker, Kevin Higgins, Wozniak and Robert Fink.

Green flag racing resumed and Higgins moved into second. Following a quick lap 10 yellow, Higgins battled hard with the leader and grabbed the race lead on lap 11. Conk fought back to regain the spot on lap 12. Two more laps clicked off and Higgins retook the race lead.

Higgins crossed the stripe first to notch his second straight victory and third overall of the season. Conk settled for second, followed by Wozniak, Shultz and Schlenker.

Heat race victories went to Steve Shultz and Bernie Uphold.

Larry Spencer III led the Four Cylinder field to the drop of the green flag in the 20-lap feature and was quickly overtaken by Tony Hilliard and Scott Adams.

With five laps complete and with Hilliard still showing the way, Jay Skupski took third from Spencer and three laps later he got by Adams for second.

Without a yellow flag to close the gap between first and second, Skupski was forced to settle for second as Hilliard went on to take the checkers for his first career victory. Spencer got by Adams for third just before the finish. John Smith rounded out the top five.

Heat race victories went to Larry Spencer III and Scott Adams.

In her first visit to an asphalt track during the regular racing season, Katie Todorow, Ms. Motorsports 2013 was also on hand to meet the fans and drivers at the track that evening.
